Hey everyone!

I'm thrilled to share some exciting news with all my dear friends, family, clients, colleagues, and other associates!

After many fulfilling years at SFS Tax & Accounting Services, I'm stepping into a new phase of my journey with SFS Tax & Accounting Services. Here's what's happening:

Semi-Retirement: Effective May 1st, I'm officially taking a step back from full-time work and transitioning into semi-retirement. Our daughter, Marissa Meldon, will be taking over the day-to-day operations as COO.

My New Role: While I'll be taking it a bit easier, I'll still be around 1-2 days a week, generally on Mondays and Wednesdays. But fear not, I'll still be representing taxpayers dealing with IRS or state agency issues...The Tax Relief Company www.thetaxreliefco.com.

Supporting the Team: In my new role as consultant, I'll be helping Marissa, Autumn Denning, EA, and Misty, our outstanding new receptionist, with some tax and accounting tasks. I'll still be preparing and reviewing returns, but not full-time. This change allows me to focus on providing you with the best service in a more flexible capacity.

Stay Connected: I'll be keeping an eye on my email, especially on my in-office days. However, I may not be as responsive on other days.

Home The Tax Relief Company Stuart is ready to handle everything for you. Leave your tax worries behind. Return to the things that matter most.

IRS Gears Up: Notice Issuing Resumes! πŸ“’

I'd like to share an update on the IRS collection letters with those of you dealing with tax problems.

They've announced they're beginning to send out reminder collection notices and letters again, which they had stopped during the pandemic.
πŸ“ͺ So, keep an eye on your mailbox because you might receive one if:

πŸ”₯You've got some tax debt hanging around from before the 2022 tax year, or if your business, nonprofit, trust, or estate owes taxes from before 2023πŸ’°.

The good news is the IRS wants to make this transition as smooth as possible for everyone.

They're going to send out a special letter called "LT38, Reminder, Notice Resumption" to give you a heads-up about any tax liability you might have. This letter will also tell you how you can get in touch with the IRS to chat about your tax bill and how to sort it out.

Moved recently? Don't sweat it! update your address with the IRS complete form 8822.

It's super important not to ignore these notices if you have a tax problem. Getting one means it's a good time to reach out to your Enrolled Agent, Jeffrey Schneider, EA, CTRS, ACT-E for help. Let's keep those tax woes at bay together. 😊

I read a newsletter today that began with a funny YouTube video perfectly capturing the essence of wanting to be a tax accountant when you grow up. It's titled "When I Grow Up… I Want to be a Tax Accountant!" and I couldn't help but share it with all of you. πŸ“½οΈ

In this heartwarming video that Jeff totally identified with, you'll see young children who dream of becoming tax accountants. The video shows their comical passion for numbers, problem-solving, and other tasks inherent to the profession.πŸ‘§πŸ‘¦πŸΌ

So, if you need comic relief this evening, I highly recommend watching this short, uplifting video. You must have the sound on and watch it to the end. πŸ˜‚πŸ€£

A surprise notice from the IRS can quickly upset your plans, both in business and personally. Here are notices the IRS must send you before levying.😲

Normally the IRS sends you five letters (five for individuals and four for businesses) before actually seizing your assets. 😯
These notices are about five weeks apart, which gives you several months to prepare for the final notice. And, the day will come when you need to take action to prevent drastic consequences from IRS collection activity.

Here are the collection letters the IRS mails to individuals:
CP14 (Notice of unpaid taxes)
CP501 (Reminder of unpaid taxes)
CP503 (Second reminder of unpaid taxes)
CP504 (Notice of Intent to Levy) may seize astate tax refund by the stated deadline.
Letter 1058 or LT 11 and other letters (Final Notice. Notice of Intent to Levy, and Notice of Rights to Appeal).
The first three notices are sent by regular mail, and the final two by certified mail.πŸ“«

If you or someone you know is facing a tax problem, don't panic! Instead, check out our free video on "What you should do and not do when you receive a tax collection notice from the I.R.S." at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lLTvPEheQ0k&t=10s. Today's tax question: Can I still claim tax refunds for past years that I did not file?

If you did not file a tax return for a particular year, you may still be eligible for a refund for up to three years from the original due date of the tax return. πŸ‘πŸ» For example, if you haven't filed your tax return for 2019, you only had until April 18, 2023, to file your return and claim any refunds to which you may be entitled. However, if you filed an extension, you still have some time.

It's important to note that if you owe taxes for the year in question, you may be subject to penalties, interest for late payment, and a late filing fee. πŸ€” Additionally, if you have not filed a tax return for multiple years, taking action as soon as possible is crucial to avoid further penalties and potential legal consequences.

To navigate the process of filing back taxes or resolving tax issues, it is highly recommended to seek the assistance of an experienced Enrolled Agent (EA) and a Tax Resolution Specialist like Jeffrey Schneider, EA, CTRS, ACT-E, who possesses the knowledge and expertise necessary to help you get back on track with your tax obligations and potentially reduce any penalties or interest you may owe.

He emphasizes that the IRS only requires six years of back returns, even if you have not filed for twenty years.

Remember, it is better to file late than never, particularly if you have refunds due to you.😯

Hey there, it's Jerry Seinfeld reminding you that today is Tax Day 2023! So, if you owe money, file your taxes and pay up ASAP. Remember, an extension gives you more time to file but not more time to pay.

To calculate your taxes due, estimate what you owe and subtract any payments you've already made. These payments include withholdings from your paychecks and estimated payments made throughout the year.

Alright, folks, don't procrastinate and get those taxes filed. Let's get it done!

Are you worried about whether the IRS is investigating you? 🧐 Here are some things to look out for:

You receive a letter or notice from the IRS about an audit or examination of your tax return. This is usually the first sign that the IRS is looking into your tax situation.

βœ“ You notice unusual activity on your bank or credit card statements that you can't explain.
βœ“ You are contacted by an IRS agent who wants to discuss your tax situation. The IRS will never call or email you to demand immediate payment or threaten legal action without sending a written notice.
βœ“ You are notified by your employer or financial institution that they have received a levy or garnishment order from the IRS. πŸ†˜
βœ“ You are contacted by someone claiming to be an IRS agent who asks for personal or financial information, such as your social security number or bank account details. The IRS will never ask for this information over the phone or email.

If you experience these signs, it's essential to take them seriously and seek professional advice from a Certified Tax Resolution Specialist and Enrolled Agent like me, Jeffrey Schneider, EA, CTRS.

Remember, the best way to avoid an IRS investigation is to file your taxes accurately and on time and to keep good records of all your income and expenses.

I hope this information is helpful! If you have any questions 🀨 or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out.

The Infrastructure Act of 2021 changed the Form 1099-K reporting, effective for transactions taking place after December 31, 2021. Form 1099-K is required to be issued if the total transactions taking place during the year reach $600 or more. This is a change from the prior requirement of $20,000 and 200 transactions.

However, in late December 2022, IRS decided to postpone this requirement one year. Therefore, for the calendar year 2022 transactions, the affected companies can continue to use the β€œ$600 or more” test for issuing Forms 1099-K instead of using the β€œ$20,000 or more AND 200 or more transactions” test for issuing Forms 1099-K. The β€œ$600 or more” provision will apply starting with the calendar year 2023 transactions.

Even though IRS postponed the effective date of the β€œ600 or more” provision, many affected companies may still use the "$600 πŸ’° or more” provision for issuing Forms 1099-K for 2022. This means there will likely be many more Forms 1099-K issued in January 2023 compared to January 2022. ☹️
