Presently, Novello urges individuals to receive the COVID-19 vaccine and wear masks to prevent the spread of the virus.

Virginia Apgar (1909-1974) is credited with designing the first standardized method for evaluating a newborn's transition to life outside of the womb. "Apgar" also stands as an acronym for the five measurements of the test: appearance, pulse, grimace, activity, and respiration. The Apgar Scale is still used to monitor newborns today.
Florence Nightingale (1820-1910) led a group of nurses treating wounded soldiers during the Crimean War. Nightingale greatly improved the medical facilities in British camps which led to a decrease in the mortality rate of wounded soldiers. She continued to advocate for improved hospital conditions upon her return to England.
Alice Hamilton (1869-1970) was a pioneer in industrial health and worker safety. At the time, occupational illnesses were often overlooked and misunderstood until Hamilton began researching and publishing articles promoting industrial medicine and hygiene.
Mary Seacole (1805-1881) assisted wounded soldiers during the Crimean War, earning her the nickname "Mother Seacole". Seacole wrote a book about her time in the war titled, "Wonderful Adventures of Mrs. Seacole in Many Lands"-- one of the first travel memoirs ever published by a Black woman.
Pat Goldman-Rakic (1937-2003), a neuroscientist from Massachusetts, contributed significantly to the study of the brain and its diseases, such as schizophrenia, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's Disease. Goldman-Rakic received countless awards for her work and helped pave the way better comprehension and treatment of many disease of the brain.
Rebecca Lee Crumpler (1831-1895) was the first African American woman to receive a medical degree in the United States. With this accomplishment, she challenged the prejudice that prevented both African Americans and women from pursuing medical careers. Dr. Crumpler also provided aid to newly emancipated African Americans by working with charity and missionary groups following the American Civil War. A photograph of Dr. Crumpler has yet to be found.
Rosalind Franklin (1920-1958) is most famous for her work in discovering the double-helix model of DNA. Although she contributed greatly to this discovery through her work as an x-ray crystallographer, Watson and Crick are often credited, and had even received Noble Prizes for this breakthrough.
Among the notable is the Founder of the American Red Cross, Clara Barton (1821-1912). Clara provided nursing care and supplies to soldiers during the American Civil War, earning her the nickname "Angel of the Battlefield".
