PUBLIC MEETING NOTICE
The City of Salem will hold a public meeting on Monday, August 5, 2024 at 5:30 PM, at City Hall, 101 S. Broadway Ave., Salem, IL 62881 to provide interested parties an opportunity to express their views on the proposed federally and state funded project consisting of the replacement of sidewalk with new ADA-compliant sidewalk featuring stamped concrete and pedestrian lighting. The project area will encompass Main St/US 50 (from Pearl St. to Jefferson St.), McMackin St. (from Pearl St. to Broadway/IL 37), and Broadway/IL 37 (from Alley St. to Church St.). The City of Salem intends to apply to the Illinois Department of Transportation for a grant through the Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program – Cycle 16 by September 30, 2024.

FOR THE SALEM POLICE DEPARTMENT
Applicants must be high school graduates or G.E.D. equivalent; at least 21 years of age; must be under 35 years of age at time of written examination and posting of eligibility register, unless proof of employment as a full-time police officer or served as auxiliary police officer for a minimum of 5 years and under 40 years of age. Copies of the following documents must be submitted with completed applications:
1. High school diploma, or its equivalent
2. Military discharge – Form DD-214, if applicable
3. Certified copy of birth certificate
4. Copy of Associate or Bachelor’s Degree, if applicable
Applications are available at the Salem Police Department, 201 S. Rotan, Salem, Illinois or may be downloaded from the City of Salem’s website at

Completed applications and attachments are to be returned to City of Salem, attn: Tabitha Meador, City Clerk, 101 S. Broadway, Salem, IL 62881. Applications will be accepted beginning August 5, 2024 and must be submitted/postmarked no later than August 31, 2024. The orientation, written examination, and physical agility tests will be held on September 21, 2024. Applicants whose applications are approved will receive notice to attend on this day.

The east end of Kell Street will be closed from Rt. 37 to Fielder Drive, due to construction, beginning Wed., July 31 at 7:00 a.m. until Thursday afternoon. We ask that residents plan an alternate route. If you have any questions, call City Hall at 618-548-2222.
The first phase of the N. College St. is also scheduled to begin on Tuesday, July 30. This project will include overlaying N. College from Broughton to Boone.
The street will NOT be closed completely or overnight, though there will be periods of time there will be closures and residents are asked to plan alternate routes.

The pool is going to delay opening until noon today due to the weather.
The City of Salem Public Works Department currently has immediate openings for a seasonal position, M-F, 7:30 am to 4:30 pm. The position includes, but is not limited to, mowing, w**d eating and leaf vac. The position will end mid-December, weather permitting. Valid driver's license and drug test required. A water main break has occurred today, Monday, July 15, 2024, in the 200 block of W. Main. Repairs are underway and services will be restored as quickly as possible.
It was necessary to shut down the water main on W. Main between S. Maple and S. College. Customers in that are who are experiencing a service outage should boil water at a rolling boil for at least FIVE minutes before using.
The BOIL ORDER will remain in effect until laboratory sampling confirms that water quality has been fully restored. At that time, notice will be sent out via the City’s page & website salemil.us and also WJBD Radio.

Due to inclement weather, Salem Family Aquatic Center will be closed today.
Today’s swim lessons will be made up on Wed., Thurs. & Fri., starting at 8:45 a.m. rather than 9:00 a.m.

July 4th Events -
The City of Salem has announced the musical entertainment planned for the 4th of July leading up to the city’s fireworks display over the Salem Reservoir.
The entertainment will begin at four Thursday afternoon at the Bryan Memorial Park Band Stage with music by Luke Purcell. He will be followed by the Cody Phillips Band with the program concluding with headliner Murphy 500.
City Clerk Tabitha Meador says several food and refreshment trucks will be available for those in attendance beginning at three pm.
The music will end in time for the audience to move closer to the Salem Reservoir for the fireworks display that will get underway around nine pm.
