On this day in history, 250 years ago:

The Rowan Resolves, passed August 8, 1774, was one of the first official steps taken by any community in British North America to establish what eventually became the United States. The resolutions, seventeen in total, were part of an effort made in every colony to respond to acts of tyranny by the British government. In particular, the Resolves helped clarify the main points in the general opposition to “taxation without representation,” one of the key issues that led to the American Revolution. They spoke out forcefully in support of the idea of an “indissoluble union” to lead the colonies forward into the future. They also called for all Rowan citizens to band together to live more frugally, promote freedom for more people, and be honest and forthright in their daily business.

After the Boston Tea Party, other colonies found themselves facing a common problem — if the city of Boston could be occupied by British military authorities, then the British could do the same to any other community who also dared to speak up or protest like Boston did. To respond to such a situation, Rowan proposed a series of economic measures that would hurt the British in their pocketbooks: a boycott of imported goods and a stronger reliance on goods made within the community.

Lastly, Rowan County residents elected their first representatives to attend a statewide meeting about colonial grievances. This small yet significant step helped launch the widespread movement for national independence two years later.

Later, one of the signers of the Resolves, William Sharpe, became a member of the Continental Congress.
