Jacob Parkin BS'21 MSIS'22, recently shed some light for us on the value of building mentor/mentee relationships in his life.
"Mentoring not only helped me achieve goals that were outside my comfort zone, but also expanded my vision on what opportunities are truly available.
Mentors have helped me academically, spiritually, socially, and in my career. Learning from another’s experience gives me confidence to move forward. Passing along this knowledge to mentees solidifies what I have learned and fosters strong relationships. It takes a village, and there are a plethora of people to learn from at the U!"

We are deeply saddened to share the passing of 2017 Founders Day honoree Bruce Bastian (B.A. and M.A., Brigham Young University).
A tech giant and philanthropist, Bastian generously supported The University of Utah's mission for decades in areas from the humanities to the hospital.
Bastian cofounded WordPerfect, which revolutionized word processing and document-generating features still relied upon today in any word processing or email application.
Bastian used his success to found the B.W. Bastian Foundation, which focuses its gifts on diversity, the underserved, and the arts in education.
To the U alone, he has given 55 Steinway pianos, a major contribution for renovations to Kingsbury Hall, annual support to the University’s LGBT Resource Center and U Pride, and thousands of dollars to other areas, including a College of Social Work social justice speaker series.
Wishing all of the fathers out there a very happy Father's Day! 🙌

A look back on the earlier days of the Marriott Library 👀
The library on campus has stood in multiple places on campus since the first University of Utah librarian was hired in 1850.
Before the current 5-story J. Willard Marriott Library was built in 1969, the library was housed in the LeRoy Cowles Building in 1900 and the George Thomas Library Building in 1935, both on Presidents Circle.
The move to the current location and name came after J. Willard Marriott contributed $1 million towards library collections, the greatest gift received by the university at the time.
How often did you find yourself studying and working with others in the library?
