โผ๏ธAttention Pet Owners: The Hidden Danger of Foxtails ๐พ
โ๏ธAs we enjoy the warmer weather and spend more time outdoors with our furry friends, it's crucial to be aware of a hidden danger lurking in fields, roadsides, and hiking trails: foxtails. These seemingly harmless plants can pose a significant threat to our pets, leading to serious health issues if not promptly addressed
โWhat Are Foxtails?
Foxtails, also known as grass awns, are spiky grass seeds that detach easily and can embed themselves into your pet's skin. During the spring and summer months, these plants are prevalent across much of the US, thriving in open fields, along roadsides, and on hiking trails.
โญ๏ธWhy Are Foxtails Dangerous?
Foxtails are designed to burrow into the ground to germinate, and unfortunately, they can do the same to your pet. Once embedded in your pet's skin, ears, paws, nose, or even eyes, foxtails can cause severe pain and infections. If not promptly removed, they can migrate through the body, leading to more serious complications that may require surgical intervention.
Signs Your Pet May Have a Foxtail:
- Excessive Licking or Chewing ๐
: If your pet is constantly licking or chewing at a particular spot, it could be trying to remove a foxtail.
- Redness or Swelling: Look for any signs of redness, swelling, or discharge, particularly in the paws, ears, and nose.
- Limping:If a foxtail gets stuck in your pet's paw, it can cause pain and limping.
Prevention Tips:
1. Regular Inspections: After walks or outdoor activities, thoroughly check your pet from nose to tail, especially focusing on the ears, paws, and nose.
2. Grooming: Keep your petโs fur trimmed, especially around the paws and ears, to reduce the risk of foxtails attaching.
3. Avoid High-Risk Areas: Try to avoid walking your pet in areas where foxtails are prevalent, particularly during peak seasons.
4. Protective Gear: Consider using protective gear like booties or vests for your dog when hiking in areas known to have foxtails.
**What to Do If You Find a Foxtail:**
If you find a foxtail on your pet and can remove it safely, do so immediately. However, if itโs embedded too deeply or youโre unsure how to proceed, contact us to schedule an appointment so that we may assist you. Prompt removal and follow-up care are essential to prevent infections and complications.
โ๏ธ You can call our clinic phone number 210-684-2273 to schedule appointments
๐ถLet's keep our beloved pets safe and healthy by staying vigilant and proactive. Share this information with fellow pet owners and make foxtail awareness a priority this season ๐ฑ

โญ๏ธWe had a special visitor at Covenant Care Animal Hospital! Goji, the Tegu Lizard, came in for a recheck appointment with Dr. Eisenmann after undergoing a Cloacal Prolapse Repair. We're delighted to share that Goji has healed beautifully and is doing exceptionally well! It's always wonderful to see our reptilian friends bounce back to health. Yay, Goji! ๐ฆ
For those who might not be familiar, Tegu lizards are fascinating creatures with some remarkable traits:
- Intelligence: Tegus are known for their high intelligence and can even be trained to respond to their names, walk on a leash, and use a litter box. ๐ง
- Omnivorous Diet: These lizards have a varied diet that includes fruits, vegetables, insects, and small animals. Their diverse diet helps them stay healthy and energetic ๐๐ฅฌ๐ฅฉ
- Size: Tegus can grow quite large, with some reaching lengths of up to 4-5 feet. ๐ Despite their size, they are often docile and can make great pets with proper care.
- Warmth Seekers: Tegus are native to South America and thrive in warm climates. They are known for basking in the sun to regulate their body temperature. โ๏ธ
- Burrowing Habits: These lizards love to dig and create burrows, which they use for shelter and protection. Providing them with a substrate they can dig in is important for their well-being.
Caring for a Tegu like Goji requires knowledge and dedication, but their unique personalities and impressive traits make them wonderful companions. We're so happy to see Goji thriving and look forward to more visits with this amazing lizard ๐ฆ

โDid you know that daily tick checks are essential for your pet, especially after outdoor adventures ๐ถ๐ฑ Gently run your fingers through your pet's fur to feel for any small bumps. If you find a tick, act quickly. You can remove it yourself or seek help from your nearest pet hospital or emergency pet hospital ๐ฅ
๐Hereโs how to safely remove a tick:
1. Use tweezers or a tick remover (like a Tick Key) to grasp the tick close to the skin, ensuring you get the whole head and body.
2. Pull the tick out with slow, steady pressure. Leaving the head in can cause infection and still transmit disease ๐ฆ
3. Place the tick in a sealed container in case your vet wants to test it
4. Clean the area with soap and water, then apply a pet-safe antiseptic ๐งผ
5. Contact us for further advice. We may request you bring the tick in for testing โ๏ธ

โ ๏ธ Did you know that many diseases from parasites can spread from your pet to your family? ๐พ Pests like and can hitch a ride into your home on shoes, clothing, or even another pet's fur. Feeling itchy yet? Letโs talk about these pests:
โญ๏ธTicks:
Ticks are not only a danger to our pets but also to us. Around 476K Americans are diagnosed with Lyme disease every year.* Ticks don't die or hibernate in winter, so always check yourself and your pets after spending time in grassy or wooded areas. If you find one, carefully remove it intact and give us a call.
โญ๏ธFleas:
Fleas are more than just an itchy nuisance. They can cause rashes in pets and humans and are linked to the resurgence of the plague. Fleas can spread rapidly from host to host, so if your pet is scratching more than usual, get them checked for fleas immediately.
