If you are fortunate enough to have money to donate, the food bank is a great cause. But please also consider helping Emilie and Tatu from Folklores Coffee House at 5009 S. Flores feed the elderly. They have closed down completely, not even taking to-go orders, in order to do this. They have funded it out od their own pockets, plus whatever donations they receive, to feed 200 people, mostly old and living alone. If you don't have money to give right now, you are not alone. But please give Folklores Coffee House your patronage when they reopen.

This is terrible news for Texas barbecue. This fast food chain is what destroyed barbecue in San Antonio. Drives all the real barbecue joints out on price. Bill Miller's: The Wal-Mart of Barbecue. They should trademark that.

Recovery and rebuilding in Refugio, Texas from the devastation of Hurricane Harvey is going to be a long, slow process. On September 1, 2017, I went with Ryan Kerr, Andrea Kerr, and Jerry Gonzalez to Refugio with the Outlaw BarBQ trailer in tow behind Jerry’s company truck, loaded with $3,000.00 worth of food and supplies paid for by the generous donors to Ryan Kerr’s gofundme project. (Ryan has donated the balance of his gofundme fundraiser to this fundraiser.)
The devastation in this town of 3,000 people was unbelievable. It looked more like a tornado touched down rather than a hurricane. Trees three feet in diameter were ripped out by their roots. Buildings were blown down and scattered across the roads. The town has no power, and because the main transmission lines were damaged, it is not expected to have power for at least two months. The local HEB had some essentials, but no proteins. Even if it had meat, only those with gas kitchens could cook it.
We were only able to stay one full day because of everyone’s time constraints. But in that time, we fed 600 hot meals to a very grateful town, and left ingredients with the locals to feed 900 more. We worked like dogs in a muggy, mosquito-infested parking lot, and spent two nights sleeping on the ground in a tent set up on asphalt. But honestly the hardest part was leaving.
So we’re going back. We want to raise as much money as we can to continue taking hot meals, other food, and supplies to this unfortunate community. I have opened a trust account at Wells Fargo to deposit these funds, and will post the books and pictures of receipts in an album on my (public) page. Every dime raised will go toward food, supplies, mosquito nets, lots and lots of mosquito spray, and gas to transport it down there and prepare the food. (The mosquitos are a very serious problem. I have never seen more, bigger, nor more aggressive mosquitos in my life. Because of the lack of electricity, many people are forced to sleep outdoors or with their doors and windows open. Many do not have window screens because of the storm. And mosquitos are the deadliest animal known to man, killing over a million people a year.) All labor will be volunteer.
We also need volunteers. Anyone who can spend a couple of days at a time and doesn’t mind roughing it. No kitchen experience necessary, just a willingness to work your tail off. You will be paid in unfathomable gratitude from the locals. I haven’t felt that good in years. We can give you a ride down there if your schedule works with ours. If not, it’s only a two hour drive from SA, and any time you can donate will be greatly appreciated. We will reimburse your gas at $0.52/mile. And finding gas is not a problem down there nor on the way there. Please bring your own sleeping gear (tent, pad, sleeping bag, etc.). We have a generator so you can charge your phones, etc.. Cell service is not a problem down there for some reason.
Please give what you can. It costs $2.00/meal to feed this town, including the cost of supplies and transportation. If you can afford $2.00, please help. If you can afford $200.00, so much the better. Any amount of time or money is desperately needed and deeply appreciated.
