💡𝗗𝗶𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄? The heartwarming story of 𝗟𝘆𝗿𝗶𝗰 & 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗞𝗲𝘆𝘀 is inspired by the story of the playwright, Roxanne Schroeder-Arce!

The musical follows Lyric, a second-grader who struggles with reading and feels too intimidated to ask her new teacher for help. With the guidance of Mr. Hartley, the school janitor, and his homemade junk robots, Lyric discovers the courage to overcome her challenges.

Like Lyric, Roxanne faced obstacles with reading in school, but it was the real-life Mr. Hartley, her school’s janitor, who stepped in to help her find her way.

MEET THE PLAYWRIGHT! ✒️

𝗟𝘆𝗿𝗶𝗰 & 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗞𝗲𝘆𝘀 playwright Roxanne Schroeder-Arce is Associate Dean of UTeach Fine Arts and Associate Professor of Theatre Education at The University of Texas at Austin. As well as an administrator and teacher, Roxanne is an artist, scholar, and arts advocate. You may remember seeing her works "Mariachi Girl" and "Señora Tortuga" on the Magik Theatre stage!

Roxanne shares a heartfelt connection to "Lyric & the Keys", inspired by her own experiences:

"Canadian author Matshona Dhiwayo once said, 'A flower can only grow through concrete if it believes in itself.' I feel this quote beautifully encapsulates the tensions explored in Lyric & the Keys. I grew up in a trailer park in rural Vermont, where my mom, with only an eighth-grade education, worked several jobs to provide for me and my three siblings. As a child, I didn’t feel like I belonged in school—I was intimidated by my teacher and felt like an imposter. But a janitor at my school, who reminded me of my family, noticed my struggle with reading and stepped in to help. Lyric & the Keys is about how anyone can be a student and a teacher to anyone else. It’s for young people, teachers, families—for anyone who understands the complexities of life. It’s about Courage and Creativity, Trust and Tenacity, Learning and Love.”
