Food enrichment: “Treat kabobs” can be offered by skewering fresh or dried fruits and vegetables using a commercial stainless steel kabob or a strip of leather. This provides an opportunity for birds to obtain these food items outside of the food dish—encouraging a variety of natural behaviors including foraging, climbing, and tearing.

June is National Pet Preparedness Month. Are you prepared to care for your pets in the event of a disaster?
To ensure a safe evacuation for the entire family, Texas A&M Veterinary Emergency Team recommends getting your pet microchipped, creating a pet disaster preparedness kit, and making a list of pet-friendly hotels and shelters. Most important, NEVER leave a pet behind!

Some birds need to be trained on how to interact and play with a toy. This can be accomplished through positive reinforcement training such as clicker training or target training to get the bird to touch or manipulate the toy. For other birds, like Yuzu the parrotlet, training IS a form of play.
National Pet Dental Health Month encourages pet owners to educate themselves about animal dental health and take steps to prevent dental disease in their fur babies. The best thing you can do is train your cat or dog to tolerate daily tooth-brushing sessions with pet-safe toothpaste to prevent the build-up of plaque and tartar. Yearly dental cleanings also go a long way in cleaning up and plaque or tartar that you may miss and thus treating and preventing further periodontal disease.
Have a bird that likes to disassemble toys…and cages? Try offering a toy that allows the bird to move and turn parts, tighten or loosen elements, and chew. These types of toys provide manipulative (aka occupational) enrichment.
Please help us find a loving home for this amazing pup!
