64th Anniversary of Detective Donald Mason's Line of Duty Death
On December 23, 1959, Detective Donald Mason was involved in a physical altercation with a suspect in a San Bernardino County courtroom. Detective Mason was struck across the chest by the suspect. After the incident, Donald was alone in his patrol unit and called for medical aid over the radio. Undersheriff Walter Pitts discovered Donald in pain and slumped in the patrol unit on a Highland roadway. Donald was transported by ambulance to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Donald began his career with the Sheriff’s Department on August 27, 1949, after serving in the United States Army. Donald is survived by his wife, Grace, and two daughters, Jacqueline and Kathleen. Please take a moment today to remember Detective Donald Mason, who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Timothy Staples – EOW December 14, 2019

On December 14, 2019, Tim was actively searching a portion of Mt. Baldy for a lost hiker in adverse conditions as part of the West Valley Search and Rescue team. During the search, Tim slipped from the trail and suffered fatal injuries.

Tim was a well-loved history teacher and cross-country coach at St. Lucy’s Priory High School and later, Damien High School in La Verne. A graduate of Gonzaga University in Washington, Tim met his wife, Katie, while at Damien and married her in 2019. Tim is survived by his new bride and his mother, Barbara.

Tim was a dedicated, well-experienced, 9-year team member, volunteering hundreds of hours for the citizens of San Bernardino County. Please take a moment to remember Tim, as he gave the ultimate sacrifice while serving as a volunteer.

“So others may live.”

Tim Staples was a teacher, cross country coach, newlywed, and a volunteer for over 9 years. He embodied the search and rescue motto, ”So others may live.” Take a moment to remember Tim and the ultimate sacrifice he made.

During week 3 of Operation Smash & Grab, our undercover teams had 8 felony and 25 misdemeanor arrests, recovering $16,315 in property. Our department is working with the District Attorney’s Office to arrest and prosecute criminals engaged in retail theft at our community businesses during the holiday.

**UPDATE - The area surrounding this incident is open**

On 11/20/23 at approximately 3:25pm, members of the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department were serving a search warrant in the 1500 block of N. Fairwood Way. While serving the warrant, shots were fired at deputies from within the residence. UPD officers responded and additional shots were fired from residence, the suspect then barricaded inside his home. After several hours, the residence caught fire and as the suspect emerged, a deputy involved shooting occurred. No officers/deputies were injured in the altercation. The scene has been rendered safe and there is no threat to the public, but the immediate area remains closed for further investigation. Unless you live in the area, please avoid the location.
