Menopause has been all over the news recently. We are so happy that the discussion is out in the open but some of the news is daunting. The symptoms sound overwhelming and the treatments minimal. We hope to dispel some of the fears and empower women to navigate the seas of change.

We will review the basics of what's happening in your body (and what isn't) and let you know what you can expect. We then want to share some basic strategies and care to fully support your body in this transitional time. We'll review the basics of diet, sleep and exercise and then go a little deeper and discuss Chinese Herbs and acupuncture and their role in menopause.

Symptoms of the perimenopause and menopause can be challenging for some women and completely debilitating for others. The perimenopause in particular can be a time of ups and downs. Fluctuating hormone levels can bring on a myriad of symptoms. It might sometimes feel like you are playing whack-a mole, trying to deal with new symptoms as they pop up.

COUNTERFEIT BOTOX!!!

Recently there have been several reports of adverse events from Counterfeit Botox. As a medspa owner , and aesthetic nurse practitioner, I just want to provide some education on the subject so that you aren’t the next case report.

19 cases of adverse events were reported, all outside of CA, including 9 who were hospitalized. All patients were female, ages 25-59. And they were all treated either by untrained or unlicensed individuals, or in non-health care settings like homes and spas.

Symptoms included blurred or double vision, difficulty swallowing, dry mouth, constipation, incontinence, shortness of breath, weakness and difficulty lifting one’s head after injection — which the FDA says are similar to those seen when botulism. 5 were tested for botulism, all with negative results.

The FDA said they appear to have been purchased from unlicensed sources, meaning they may be “misbranded, adulterated, counterfeit, contaminated, improperly stored and transported, ineffective and/or unsafe.”

1. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is too good to be true. Check and make sure that you’re getting a FDA approved brand. The brands of botulinum toxin that have been FDA approved are Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, Jeuveau and Daxxify. Typical cost per unit for one of these brands is $10-14 per unit (or $3.33-4.50 for Dysport) .

2. Check your providers credentials, in California, only nurses, NPs, PAs and MDs are licensed to inject.

3. Does your provider have you fill out a health history and consents? Do they ask about your previous experience with neurotoxins ? Do they take baseline photos? These are all basic things that should happen at an appointment.

Most injectors are amazing and want what’s best for their patients. But, it’s your face and your health, so be careful. Please feel free to reach out either questions, I’m happy to answer !

2014 vs 2024! I was 40 years old on the left, and now I’ll be 50 years old on the right!

So much happened in ten years - physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.

But, for the sake of this before and after - let’s talk physical. I’m going to be totally honest and vulnerable, because I’d prefer you all think I’m naturally beautiful (my radiance is 💯 natural and hard earned).

The photo on the left was when I decided to do something about my melasma, after some lame guy I was dating suggested he take me to get my mustache waxed (a low point on many levels).

Since that time - and after a lot of experimentation, I’ve come up with a way to keep my melasma under control and my skin looking pretty f**king awesome (BEE Radiant Vitamin C Serum, BEE Joy Even Pigment Pads, BEE Grateful Repair and Renew Retinoin 5x Treatment, BEE Grace Neck Firming Cream, Alastin Eye Treatment, Alastin Restorative Skin Complex, Alastin HydraTint Pro Mineral Sunscreen, Microneedling with exosomes and Klardie Ruby skin booster, and VI Peels).

I just wanted to reintroduce myself to any new followers.

My name is Nyree van Maarseveen, WHNP, CNM. I’m the owner of Beauty Energy Exchange Aesthetics and Wellness. I created my practice because I love aesthetics, AND, I also know that feeling beautiful is an inside job. I feel like this is something overlooked by most medispas. My goal is to help my clients feel beautiful and empowered.

I provide aesthetic treatments (Botox, filler, Sculptra, chemical peels and microneedling), and, I hold events focused on nurturing the heart and soul (where all proceeds go to charity).

I used 159 units of Dysport on this beautiful, amazing woman (equivalent of 53 units of Jeuveau or Botox). It sounds like a lot of units, but dose equals duration, you either block the muscle from contracting or you don’t , so make it last longer .
