Itâs St Patrickâs Day so we wanted to spotlight a Woman in Irish History! đŽđŞ
Hereâs what we learnedâŚ
âCountess Constance Markievicz, the revolutionary politician, rebel and activist. She devoted her life to the pursuit of Irish freedom and womenâs rights while championing the interests of the poor and working class people of Ireland.
She was the first woman elected to British parliament in 1918 but refused her seat, and from 1919 to 1922 became the only woman to serve in the first DĂĄil Ăireann as the minister of labour.
She took an active part in the 1916 Easter Rising, offering the following advice to other women who wanted to participate: âDress suitably in short skirts and strong boots. Leave your jewels in the bank and buy a revolver.ââ
