As we close out our fiscal year, we’re reflecting on the work behind and ahead of us, as we seek to improve health and well-being for those in under-resourced communities in our region. Notably, we are giving a shoutout to our Executive Director, Sarah Lyman. During Sarah’s five years with AHF, she has led us through great periods of growth, both in our funding portfolio and the work toward our vision for universal health equity in the San Diego and Imperial County region. Sarah has directed and overseen approximately $34 million in funding into communities, initiatives, and impact investments. Over the same period, AHF has helped catalyze $92.2 million in additional aligned funding for important community initiatives. AHF’s impact investment portfolio has grown by 125% during this period with $5.4 million currently committed to program and mission related investments.

Sarah has also led us in shifting toward greater trust-based philanthropy in our approach, including multi-year core operating grants, bringing on resident leaders to contribute their lived experience to the Innovation Initiative (i2) Milestone-based Challenge Grant program, and most notably our evolving equitable partnership with the Imperial Valley Wellness Foundation. Capping off these past five years, is the 2024 recognition by the The Nonprofit Institute at USD who awarded AHF with the inaugural Trust Award for Excellence in Philanthropy and Governance.

Join us in celebrating Sarah Lyman. We’re excited to be on this journey together!

This week's Grantmakers In Health annual conference in Portland offered many sessions and workshops in which to hear and connect with our peer funders. This particular session on Equitable Capacity Building to Support Health Equity was especially good. Circled in photo are AHF's Sarah Lyman and Imperial Valley Wellness Foundation's Roque Barros.

This was a powerful presentation at this week's Grantmakers In Health annual conference in Portland. is a big area of concern and many factors must be considered. This presentation focused on a holistic approach which we applaud.

Yesterday's plenary, "The Kids Are Not Alright: Strengthening Child Well-Being," considered the current state of youth mental health and where philanthropy can play a greater role in earlier mental health support. Dr. Sejal Hathi, Director of Oregon Health Authority, asked, "How can philanthropists create space for play and community?" Panelists encouraged philanthropy to invest strategically in youth mental health, especially in holistic, wraparound programs versus purely clinical treatment options. Panelist Cherrial Odell, Youth Mental Health Lived Experience Expert and Advocate, wrapped it up succinctly: "Philanthropy literally saved my life."

Alliance, along with Mission Driven Finance and BQuest Foundation, made an impact investment to support the development of Hilltop Encanto. “We applaud the focus on first-time homebuyers, and the developer’s commitment of time, talent and treasure to support middle-income families in their efforts to build intergenerational wealth” said Sarah Lyman, AHF Executive Director. “It’s exciting to see real families like David and Mayisha move into their homes with instant equity that will grow overtime and hopefully serve as a long-term asset for their future.”

The homebuyer assistance program includes help with covering closing costs and down-payment assistance, along with workshops for new homebuyers to learn about financing, bank programs, and what it means to be a homeowner.
