Last night I attended the awards ceremony for the San Diego aka Del Mar county fair Design in Wood show. It’s always kind of a cinematic stillness one feels when passing through the empty fairgrounds all set up but not yet open. This years show had really amazing work as per usual and I was honored to receive two honorable mentions for my “waves in the wood” series artworks and a 2nd place award for my humpback whale marquetry piece “The Cruisers.” The work looks beautifully displayed with gallery quality lighting that really makes the grain pop. Really grateful for the exhibition opportunity the San Diego Fine Woodworking people have created once again. If you’re going to the faire don’t miss this years Design in Wood:)

Garage sale score on my neighborhood walk to my booth at Fiesta Hermosa. Yes that is $300 worth of rare spalted Birds Eye Maple acquired for the price of one fancy burger. The guys young son was nice enough to help carry it to my booth where upon our walk we discussed the prospect of him making his own skateboard despite his local school ending the woodworking course.

I give you “The Sword in the Ashen Seas” 2.0. This work was made custom for an owner of a sushi restaurant. There’s 7 corpuscular light beams under the water because apparently “7” is a very lucky number in Japan. “4” apparently is very unlucky in Japan so I was given firm instructions to definitively not have “4.” Glad it looks so good with those 7 eghhh?
After a huge amount of effort put into this I’ll soon get to enjoy presenting the work to my patron in person. However, more pieces in this limited second edition of my marquetry Swordfish series are available to you.
