R.B. Stevenson Gallery is pleased to present the exhibition “Echo” a solo show of new paintings by California based artist Chris Trueman.

Chris Trueman is a contemporary artist based in Southern California, known for his vibrant abstract paintings that explore color, form, and the interaction of light. Trueman's work is often characterized by its energetic brushwork, bold compositions, and a sense of dynamic movement across the canvas.

Trueman's artistic practice is influenced by various modern and contemporary art movements, including Abstract Expressionism and Color Field painting. He employs a process-driven approach, where spontaneous gestures and layered applications of paint create depth and complexity within his works. His use of color is particularly notable, as he experiments with vivid hues and subtle tonal shifts to evoke different emotional and perceptual responses.

In addition to his studio practice, Trueman is also an educator, which informs his critical engagement with art history and theory. His work has been exhibited widely in galleries and museums both in the United States and internationally, contributing to the dialogue surrounding abstract painting in the 21st century.

Overall, Chris Trueman's contributions to contemporary art are characterized by a commitment to exploring the possibilities of abstraction through a synthesis of technique, intuition, and theoretical inquiry. His paintings invite viewers to contemplate the interplay of color and form, encouraging a deeper engagement with the visual and sensory experience of art.

R.B. Stevenson Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition "Selections from the Studio" featuring new and current paintings by Los Angeles artist Charles Arnoldi.

Charles Arthur Arnoldi (born April 10, 1946) is an American abstract painter, sculptor, and printmaker. A versatile, ever evolving artist, known for working with non-traditional materials, Arnoldi has produced a hugely varied body of work. From traditional oil paintings on canvas, to bronze sculpture, monoprints, lithographs, “chainsaw paintings” (wood panels cut into with power saws), aluminum paintings and polyethylene wall reliefs, his vocabulary of artistic expression is constantly expanding.

During his early career, he was known for his “stick paintings” where, instead of working on traditional canvas, he utilized actual tree branches as a vehicle to draw lines through space, employing shadow, depth and color to create powerful and expressionistic compositions. Those early explorations continue to inform his current work.

In 1969 he was awarded the Los Angeles County Museum of Art's Young Talent Award. He was invited to participate in Documenta V in Kassel, Germany in 1972 and went on to receive two NEA Artist Fellowships, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and a Maestro Grant from the California Arts Council.
His work is in the collections of many major museums, including the Metropolitan Museum, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, The Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, The National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C., the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco, The Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, The Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, and the Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena, California, La Jolla Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego.

Tonight Opening Reception for the Artist
Saturday October 21, 5 - 8 pm.
R.B. Stevenson Gallery is pleased to present the exhibition "Seen & Forgotten" featuring new paintings by San Diego artist Stephen P. Curry.
Still life painting is a questioning of beauty in light of our immediate reality. These paintings begin with imagery of current events that are depictions of destruction, violence, and death in the initial underpainting process as a way to influence, contradict and subvert the act of observation and the painting process as well as the final opposing representation of the beauty of nature. These contradictory images exist simultaneously to engage in a conversation in the seen and the unseen or forgotten. At the same time challenging, yet playful compositional choices are meant to break with traditional still life and illusionistic representational effects are intentionally brought up short by the physical nature of the paint itself. Drips and splatters, dabs and smears, paint does what paint does.

Now on view at R.B. STEVENSON R.B. Stevenson Gallery.
William Engel’s work speaks a multilayered language that is at once personal and full of thoughtful inclusion, characterized by carefully organized rhythm of organic forms, mastery of the nuances of color and composition as well as a display of emotional intensity. As an artist who constantly interrogates what he sees, he strives to shape and reshape the basis of his art as well as impress upon us a sense of adventure and discovery

R.B. STEVENSON gallery presents David Ivan Clark.
David's paintings hover in the space between romantic landscape and weathered industrial artifact. They dwell in limbo, each marking the spot where nostalgia collides with fact, where celebration and elegy converge.
From a distance the paintings present land, sky and nothing more. Held up to the turbulent flux of the mechanized world, they offer refuge. As one draws near, however, bucolic illusion becomes fugitive: deep space collapses to surface; distant horizon reverts to paint, pitted and scoured; serene haven, glimpsed as if on film, old, grainy and scratched, dissolves to abstraction.

Geoffroy Tobé is a French artist and educator based out of San Diego. Inspired by French moderns as well as California colorists, Geoffroy’s paintings explore nostalgia and memories through people, objects and places with solid, almost geometric, compositions and a powerful use of color. He trained in classical studio arts and art direction at Penninghen in Paris, where he also taught for twelve years. Since 2020, he has taught painting and studio arts at UCSD. He is the president of CREHA, a cultural organization for his region in the Alps, which witnessed unique 20th century art history that has had a lasting impact on his vision and work.

With “Shelter”, Geoffroy is questioning the boundaries of literal and figurative definitions. Shelters are structures that protect you from the elements and give you a place to stay: if you get lost during a storm, the first thing to do is seek shelter. Alongside food, water and sleep, shelter is one of the human physiological needs and at the base of Maslow’s pyramid. Could a shelter also be something, somewhere or someone we feel comfortable with, reassuring us from fear and doubt? Memories, familiar sceneries, places he once lived, or objects he compulsively collects. To him, they are all shelter.
