1️⃣ The *quality* of your food is more important than how much you eat

🧐 Think about it: not many of us are overdosing on vegetables and lean steak
Yet, how easy is it to devour a pint of ice cream (which is *supposed* to be 3-5 servings)?

>>If you give your body ingredients it recognizes as fuel
it self-regulates, and your hunger/fullness cues become exceptionally clear…

🥳 i.e. No more macro tracking or calorie counting

2️⃣ Exercise improves your quality of life.
But nutrition determines the quality of your exercise.

If you want to be able to:
🚽 get on and off the toilet independently
…And pick up your grandkids
…And stay out of a nursing home
You HAVE to keep your body moving!!

😰 But that becomes dreadful if you don’t fuel your exercise properly

🏎️ Putting diesel in a Ferrari will destroy the engine
If not immediately, it will eventually.
🥦 🥩 Putting the right fuel in your engine will allow you to run forever, without issues.

^^Follow these basic principles, and watch the magic unfold!

I was wrong.

And I humbly admit it.

Here’s the thing: nutrition science is still in its infancy.

🧪 We didn’t have names and functions for vitamins and minerals until the mid-1900s!
(That’s not very long in the grand scheme of humanity…)

So some of my OG philosophies on what ‘healthy food’ is
have shifted. Here’s what I now know:

1️⃣ dairy is v controversial.
I’m sure I’ll take some heat on this post for my stance.
But based on my experience and research,
The inflammation many of us experience from dairy isn’t the milk itself, but rather what we do to it + how we raise the animals providing it.
Get milk in its unadulterated form, from an animal raised in its natural habitat, and you’ve got INCREDIBLE nutrients

2️⃣ bread is not the enemy.
Again, it’s what we do to grains (the genetic modification and chemicals used to harvest them) that cause issues.
In addition, reconfiguring HOW MUCH we actually eat plays a major role in bread’s effect on the body.
I’m now in my sourdough era and couldn’t be happier 🥖

3️⃣ water.
I’m still learning about this one, but I now refuse to drink from plastic water bottles. And someday I’ll invest in a whole-house water filtration system - my skin and hair will thank me, too.
Take a second to google the water reports for your area and see how many chemicals are in your water. Heavy metal toxicity is a real thing you don’t want to mess with.

To be clear: I’m not trying to fear-monger.
I simply want to use this platform to inform and support.
Because I’m a huge nerd 🤓 about this stuff,
And I know not everyone else is!

🚨Scale 1-10: how good of a promise-keeper are you?

^^My coach asked me this the other day, and it’s really rocking my world… 😅

Because I think most of us really try to stay true to our word
Especially when we make promises to other people

🤔 But what about promises to ourselves?
• To not hit snooze
• To workout 3x this week
• To eat healthy all day, and not cave-in at night

Idk about you, but if I don’t follow-through on a promise to a friend, I feel guilty about it foreverrr!

❓So why do we break promises to ourselves so easily?
Is it because no one’s watching??

>> pssst: if you have kids, a spouse, a best friend, a parent, or anyone you see regularly
👀 I promise you someone is watching

👉 Keeping promises to yourself opens the door to the changes you want in your life
🙌 And those changes allow you to show up as the best version of you!

Be a promise-keeper.

✅ Start with the easiest promise to fulfill, and build momentum
Future-you will thank you.
>> And present *loved one* will thank you, too.

👋 As a former treadmill bunny myself,

I cannot emphasize enough how drastic my results got once I made NUTRITION my MAIN FOCUS

**that’s also why I shifted my career from Personal Trainer to Nutritionist…

⛽️ The fuel you put in your engine determines how well you function!

Think of it this way:
You exercise for maybe 1hr/day (give or take)
But you make an average of 200 food choices/day 🤯

…if you don’t have a plan to control those choices,
you can see how quickly your exercise efforts are obliterated

>> Not to mention: what you eat determines how effective your exercise efforts are - don’t work just to ‘break even’
Work to make gains!

Sandy went from sugar addict to “I never even crave it”. Here’s how:

1️⃣ We reconfigured breakfast. Instead of having a brown breakfast (toast, cereal, oats, pastries, etc) she eats protein & vegetables

2️⃣ We audited the sneaky sugar sources in her routine. Sugar isn’t just the desserts - it’s peanut butter, bacon, salad dressing… swapping those out for sugarless alternatives significantly reduced cravings

3️⃣ We set boundaries around dessert. If you try and swear off your food kryptonite, you’ll only feel dangerously guilty when the inevitable happens, and you eat the thing.
^^That’s not healthy.
However, setting personal guardrails around the treat so that it’s infrequent, but not a ‘never’ is actually quite freeing.

^^These 3 shifts helped Sandy break free from her “sweet tooth” identity and the strong sugar cravings

Now: she has control over when / what she eats
and never feels guilty about her choices

💥Oh, and did I mention she’s lost nearly 15lbs + relieved her GI issues in the process??
What a neat side effect.

🗣️ If you want to change your body and truly BE healthier,
having a clear plan is essential

When I started my own health journey, I quickly realized that lack of clarity in my plan led to lack of results 🙄
….Which ultimately led to frustration & defeat

👇🏼Here’s how to avoid that mistake:

1️⃣ DEFINE exactly what you want to achieve. Make it measurable. You should know exactly when you’ve ’made it’. Get ultra-clear.

2️⃣ BREAK IT DOWN: lots of smaller, manageable steps gives you momentum and adds up to something much bigger. Focus on the action, not the outcome
**Ex: if you want to have sustained energy during the day, start by just having protein & veggies for breakfast.

3️⃣ STAY CONSISTENT. We are the products of what we do and consume repeatedly. You can’t run a mile by taking one giant step. But if you continually take manageable steps, and don’t stop, you’ll get to a mile much faster than you realize.

Honestly, having a clear plan takes the brain power and the confusion out of trying to change your body.

‼️ Friendly reminder that even the smallest changes in your routine can have a MAJOR impact on your overall quality of life

🎶 Let’s throw it back to Choir Tour, circa 2015.
>> Every year, my college choir would travel to cool places and perform in various venues across the world

🏡 And instead of booking hotels, we would organize home-stays with alumni & their friends along the tour

One home-stay in particular I will never forget:

🪴 Our host, Sue, was a delightful woman with strong hippie energy - like, you couldn’t see the floor she had so many plants

🍳 For breakfast she made us scrambled eggs…but with a twist:

She added finely chopped kale to the eggs

“I always try to sneak in extra vegetables wherever I can. Hope you don’t mind!” she said, setting the green eggs in front of us.

🤯 It blew. my. mind.

NEVER had it ever occurred to me to eat vegetables at breakfast…

Never did it occur to me to add things other than milk and cheese to my eggs…

And if I had my eyes closed, I never would have known there was kale in my eggs

From that day forward, I have gone out of my way to include some kind of vegetable in breakfast

🙌🏼 As a result, I have more energy throughout the day
I have minimal cravings

And I actually *enjoy* breakfast (instead of finding it burdensome)

☝🏼This one change was the gateway to completely changing my diet (and body)

>>Even the smallest of actions can have an incredible impact on you

Listen, I know that resisting emotional eating can be hard

😰 Especially when you are ultra busy, sleep-deprived, stressed, with everything left on the to-do list

But there are a few tricks you can do to make things easier for you stay in control:

1️⃣ Start your day with protein + vegetables

2️⃣ Avoid sugar in the morning

>> Starting your day with protein + vegetables AND avoiding sugar will help eliminate the midday crash, which is usually when we make a “pick-me-up” impulsive, less-than-healthy food choice

3️⃣ Wait 5 minutes before eating anything unplanned

>> this can help us avoid diving into the unnecessary temptations

4️⃣ Only eat while sitting + undistracted to minimize impulse choices

>> Not only does this help with digestion, but deters “drive-by” bites (I’m looking at you, secretary’s desk candy bowl)

5️⃣ Determine if it’s a craving or a temptation
>Cravings are your body communicating a nutritional NEED
>Temptations are fleeting & deter your progress
**feed cravings.
**starve temptations.

🚨 When I look back to 9 years ago, I feel sorry for that girl who was struggling so much with body image & how to change (in a healthy way)

She was confused, unhappy, and defeated.

⭐️ But the years since then have been LIFE-CHANGING in every aspect:

I was graduating from college, and none of my ‘dream job’ offers were coming through.
❌ I was in a toxic relationship
❌ I got diagnosed with skin cancer (for the first time)
❌ My grandmother passed away
❌ And my best friend completely ghosted me. Like, totally non-communicative.

😞 I was the most depressed I had ever been, feeling like the world was crumbling around me

Then one day, after a meltdown on the phone to my mom, she said something that hurt in the moment, but has stuck with me ever since…

⚡️“If you don’t like the way your life is, then do something about it. You can’t keep feeling sorry for yourself and expect things to change.”

😳After that, I realized the only thing I could control in my life was how well I took care of my body.
People will always disappoint, hurt, and fail to meet expectations
👉🏻 But they can’t force me to be unhealthy.

So I fully dove into the world of fitness…
>>Literally going from gym to gym and using the free-week-trial until I ran out of gyms

‼️ I hired a personal trainer my bank account said I couldn’t afford
…but in retrospect, my well-being couldn’t afford NOT to hire him
Because he believed in me when I couldn’t
And he held me accountable when I wanted to quit

Within a month I started to feel joy again
…I remembered what confidence felt like

**And when I plateaued, THAT’S when my nutrition journey really took off…

I hope this is encouraging for you wherever you are in your journey.

When you are trying to change your body, there are countless paths that lead to dead ends.

🙄 I know… I’ve traveled down many of them

So I wanted to share an easy guide on what to do and NOT to do to help with your journey

Here’s what I did (and did not do) to change my body
**and keep it:

✅Added veggies to EVERY meal (not just an afterthought)

✅Eliminated processed food (entirely, then veryyyy limited)

✅Prioritized protein. And lots of it.

❌Eat only packaged foods from weight loss companies

❌Avoid carbs like the plague

❌Justify treats by spending more time exercising

I post daily tips & strategies to help women figure out a nutritional plan that helps them get the body they feel great in…and keep it.

🥰 Here’s a friendly reminder that you can eat out, enjoy treats AND still stay aligned with your health & weight loss journey…

I know you feel guilty when you eat something that isn’t “perfect” or the healthiest

^^but that guilt only hurts your progress

👎🏼 Guilt & shame are terrible motivators…
They burn out quickly and leave you back at square one

Progress is not linear, and it doesn’t require perfection
**It just requires consistency

>> And consistency looks different for everyone...

It’s up to you to break the cycle!

If this is something you’re struggling with, try applying some of these tips every time you feel yourself stumbling…👇🏻

✅ remember your body is resilient. It can recover. Give it the tools it needs to do so at the next meal! (i.e. veggies & protein)

✅ just like 1 salad doesn’t make you “healthy”
1 pizza or 1 donut (or 3) doesn’t unravel days/months of progress

✅ when you drop your phone and the screen cracks, you don’t say “well it’s already ruined” and stomp all over it, right? So when you have a stumble, don’t continue into sabotage. Be grateful it wasn’t worse, pick up the pieces, and let it be a lesson for the future!

❌Myth: It’s all about calories in vs. calories out

✅Truth: just like a Subaru burns gas differently than a Honda, two bodies burn the same calories differently. Simply counting calories is not enough. The QUALITY & your body’s ability to burn calories is more important than the sheer number

❌Myth: Everything in moderation

✅Truth: some things are simply never okay. It’s a hard truth to accept, but the sooner you do, the clearer the lines in the sand will be drawn on what you should eat

❌Myth: It’s all about diet and exercise

✅Truth: sleep, environment, relationships, stress…they all play a vital role in your body composition. You can be eating ‘perfectly’ and crushing it in the gym, but if the other factors are wild, you will struggle

There are SOOOO many metrics that track progress outside of the number on the scale…

> energy throughout the day
> recovery from workouts
> mood / irritability
> brain fog
> how clothes fit
> stomach pain/digestion
> skin clarity
> ability to fall asleep
> waking up well rested

…I can go on and on.

‼️ Don’t let the scale be a day-ruiner.
Anything under 4lbs of a change overnight
❌ isn’t noteworthy

The # 1 thing that held me back on my fitness journey??
My nutrition 💯

The gym was honestly easy for me
I found it fun to challenge myself physically

Sure, I had seasons where I was basically clueless, and started as an ‘elliptical bunny’ just hoping for the best – but the biggest game changer was figuring out my nutrition…

😵‍💫 There were so many diet plans, it was hard to know what was actually ‘right’

Some things I tried that either didn’t work or made me miserable:

•“If it fits your macros” and not caring about food quality
•Low carb/no carb
•Only lean poultry meats
•“Burn off calories” if I didn’t eat ‘clean’ the day before
•Binge on junk because “I earned it” - only to feel guilty about it later

Eventually I realized how broken my relationship with food had become
💔 So I broke up with all ‘diet’ plans and made my own:
👉🏻 A refreshing way to think about food that isn’t restrictive
(and that my body thanks me for)

Truth is: your diet isn’t just a plan to lose extra weight and get lean
⭐️ Your diet is how you take care of yourself. It’s a way of life.

…and it’s waaaay more than the 80% people say it is.

🚨 You don’t have to sacrifice an entire day every week for meal prepping to take control of your nutrition.

And you don’t have to white-knuckle your way through every food temptation to start seeing progress…

> The ‘all-or-nothing’ mindset works for some people
>> But the ‘something is better than nothing’ works way better for most of us

🚶‍♀️Going for a walk is better than not exercising at all

🙌🏼 Making small shifts to your daily food routine is better than a major overhaul that’s eventually followed by a major binge

📌Save this post and start applying these QUICK tips every day.

Repetition has a way of adding up, and soon the results will start to show!

You can ALWAYS start small. That’s still a start.

✅ Move for 10 minutes.
✅ Go to sleep 30 minutes sooner.
✅ Add vegetables to every meal.

🚨 I haven’t always been the ‘healthy girl’⁣

🍪 In fact, I legitimately ate a chocolate chip cookie the size of my face for breakfast almost every day in high school…⁣

🫣 When I first attempted to be healthier in college, ⁣
breakfast was oatmeal made with skim milk + a tablespoon of brown sugar…⁣

😰 I truly didn’t know how to cook anything beyond scrambled eggs…⁣

😩 And when I 𝘥𝘪𝘥 try something new, it was either burnt or bland⁣

1. I started with zero awareness of nutrition⁣
2. Then blindly followed diet trends that I heard about online⁣
3. And honestly, I never 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 got results⁣

….So I took matters into my own hands⁣
🧐 Did a DEEP dive into nutrition science⁣
And eventually became a Certified Nutritionist⁣

Now? I have published recipe books! 📕 ⁣
• People ask ME for advice about food allll the time⁣
• I 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘧𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘭𝘺 bring homemade food to potlucks (and there’s never leftovers) ⁣

🌊🎢 Last time I went to a Waterpark, ⁣
I remember feeling so self-conscious that ⁣
I wore a shirt & shorts over my bathing suit…😞⁣

🫣 I didn’t want people to see my belly fat
And I hated the way my thighs jiggled when I walked. ⁣

Last week, almost 2 decades later, I returned to that same water park…⁣

👙 Only this time, in a bikini I love
😎 𝘞𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘧𝘶𝘭𝘭 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘧𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘪𝘯 𝘮𝘺 𝘣𝘰𝘥𝘺. ⁣

What changed? 3 things:⁣

1️⃣ I started caring more about 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐦𝐲 𝐛𝐨𝐝𝐲 𝐟𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬, and less about how it looks…⁣
>> That means moving my body with intention every day (lifting, cardio, yoga, hiking, surfing, backyard gymnastics…)⁣

2️⃣ I started caring about the performance of my body in those activities…which meant 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐭𝐡 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐨𝐝 and nutrition⁣

3️⃣ I started regularly praying “𝐆𝐨𝐝, 𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐩 𝐦𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐞𝐞 𝐦𝐲𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐲 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐬𝐞𝐞 𝐦𝐞. You say I’m beautifully and wonderfully made, in YOUR image. I am your child. Give me vision to see things like you do…”⁣
