With a love for the game, Johnson Tran (‘09) combined his love for sports with an exciting business career. After enrolling in the San Diego State Sports MBA, he used his degree to navigate the sports industry. He now serves as the director of community engagement for the reigning NBA Champions, Boston Celtics. Tran attributes his success to the skills and experiences he gained at San Diego State University .

Meet alumna Tiffany Reyes (‘18), who has transitioned from being a student benefiting from mentorship to a Systems Engineering Manager at Northrop Grumman. Mark Jones (‘09) and his brother Dean (’82) are turning their love for San Diego State University Athletics into a lasting legacy. Through their estate gifts to San Diego State University, they’re securing a bright future for the university that reflects a deep connection to the institution and a commitment to supporting its growth for generations to come.

Their “Black Girl Magic” group symbolizes resilience and success. Despite the challenges of an online format and living across the country, their sisterhood thrived through video calls, support during personal challenges, and milestones like their “secret sista exchange”.

“I feel like I am finally able to have a seat at the table.”

With a dream to acquire a higher education and lift his family out of poverty, Raymond Wells (‘22), utilized all the resources around him to do so. With the help of the San Diego State University Retirement Association, he could redirect his focus to his career rather than worrying about finances. Wells is now giving back to the community through nonprofits such as Healthy Connect, and has even continued to push himself by pursuing his master's degree.

“I still learn so much from observing my students in the studio, as everyone has a unique approach to art.”

LeoAngelo Lacuna Reyes (‘15) is using his love for paint to make the world around him more palatable. His artistic journey began in San Diego, where he took it upon himself to transform electrical boxes using his creativity and some paint. Since his graduation from SDSU, Reyes has remained committed to giving back to the community by teaching students a wide range of art skills through classes and workshops.

Christopher Phillips ('24) exemplifies the parallel between two fields: aerospace engineering and the military. As a part of the T2E program during his time at San Diego State University, he thrived, leveraging leadership and problem-solving to tackle rigorous coursework and challenging projects.

His resilience and adaptation from serving in the U.S. Marines and attending have allowed him to embark on a career at a research and development firm.

“It's rare to get a couple to graduate at the same exact time, same exact day. So I wanted to make it a little more memorable for us."

San Diego State University's 2024 commencement was a historic day for many, but it was even more special for SDSU College of Sciences graduates Elias Meamari and Mariam Zaki.

Moments after Friday's morning ceremony, Elias got down on one knee and asked Mariam to marry him on stage. She said yes!

Now, the couple not only leaves the university as and , but they leave with another title: fiancees. ♥️🎓
