The World’s 21 Most Powerful September 11 Memorials
From New York to Italy to England, these architects, designers, and artists pay moving tributes to the victims of the attacks
Designing a memorial, particularly a 9/11 memorial, can be a challenging yet extremely meaningful process for an architect, designer, or artist. The question of how to sum up the impact of an unimaginable tragedy in a single structure or sculpture has ultimately led to creatively symbolic designs that seek to honor the memories of the victims and serve as places for remembrance and meditation for those left behind.

Number of Homes on the Market in S.F. Jumps, Pricing Drops
The net number of homes on the market in San Francisco, including condos, jumped over 20 percent last week following a typical holiday drop.
As such, while listed inventory levels are still 10 percent lower than at the same time last year, they’re 30 percent higher than average for this time of the year, 90 percent higher than prior to the pandemic, and 150 percent higher than in 2015, despite misreports of “record low inventory levels” and subsequent misanalyses of the market at hand.
And while listed inventory levels jumped, the average asking price per square foot of the homes on the market in San Francisco dropped around 6 percent and is now down around 9 percent on a year-over-year basis

Discover The Nation’s Oldest Italian Heritage Parade In San Francisco
Viva Italia! Don't miss the Italian Heritage Parade on October 8, 2023 in San Francisco's North Beach neighborhood.
San Francisco’s vibrant Italian community will come out in droves this October to celebrate the Italian Heritage Festival. Festivities include a bazaar all weekend long, and of course the Italian Heritage Parade with Fernet pit stops along the route on Sunday, Oct. 8, 2023. You don’t want to miss this giant party lifting up the contributions of Italian-Americans in San Francisco. Read on to discover the schedule of events.
Italian Heritage Parade
12:30pm Sunday, Oct. 8, 2023
This legendary event is the oldest Italian Heritage Parade in the United States, dating back to 1868. Originally the Columbus Day Parade, it officially changed its name in 1994 after public backlash against an event celebrating Christopher Columbus. Nevertheless the parade still draws a loyal crowd to celebrate Italian-American culture in San Francisco.
This year’s parade will start off at 12:30pm on Sunday Oct. 8 at the foot of Jefferson and Powell Streets in Fisherman’s Wharf. It will cruise through North Beach on Columbus Ave and end in Washington Square in front of the church.
Fernet Pit Stops are a fun part of the parade route where you can savor some Fernet periodically along the route to keep you going. See here for participating bars, restaurants, and 2023 updates.

San Francisco’s Oldest House Is Now Available To Rent
The historic home that is over 170 years old is available to rent, but only as an office space.
Beautiful historic homes and buildings populate San Francisco’s streets. From the rows of colorful Victorians to large government buildings, it’s easy to reminisce on San Francisco’s history.
Now, a piece of SF’s history is looking for its newest occupants. The Abner Phelps House, generally considered one of the oldest houses in SF, is available for rent. Before you get too eager, while the historic house is on the renter’s market, it is available as an office space rather than a residential one.
The three-story house has five parking spaces, a small front garden, and totals to 3,800 square feet. The historic building is located at 1111 Oak Street, in the Haight, just off the bustling Divisadero Street and within walking distance from the scenic Panhandle. This historic house turned office doesn’t come cheap; the rental rate is $15,998 per month or $191,976 for a year.

There Are New Free Pickleball Courts At The Palace Of Fine Arts
With the sport's recent popularity, SF Recreation and Parks has added indoor pickleball courts at the Palace of Fine Arts.
On July 11, 2023, SF Recreations and Parks opened new pickleball courts at the historic Palace of Fine Arts. The courts are open to the public and free of charge. Pickleball has seen increasing popularity nationwide, and SF is no exception. The sport is very social and typically accessible for beginners– even if you frequently looked for excuses to get out of gym class as a kid– the game can still be fun for new players. Plus, it’s a great way to socialize and meet new people while being active.
Three brand new courts are available Tuesday through Sunday mornings, from 9:30 am to 11:00 am. Players can easily reserve the courts via the Rec and Parks online system.
The courts are the product of a partnership between SF Recs and Park and Dink SF, a pickleball organization that offers clinics, classes, and machine rentals. Classes various courses include a 75-minute beginner course, drill play, an introductory clinic, and even a class targeted at tennis players wanting to learn pickleball.
Plus, if you want a solo-practice session, you can book a ball machine to get plenty of reps in. Located in the scenic and vibrant Marina District, you have plenty of great restaurant options for a post-game snack.
Pickleball’s recent popularity has skyrocketed in San Francisco. Just five years ago, in 2018, the city only had 12 courts, and now the new courts make the count reach an impressive 67.

Price for Prestigious Nob Hill Penthouse Has Dropped by a Third
Purchased for $7 million at the end of 2013 and then completely renovated, with custom millwork, Venetian plaster, Italian marble, and high end finishes throughout, the 4,320-square-foot, two-level penthouse unit #1002 atop the Park Lane at 1100 Sacramento Street returned to the market priced at $12.495 million in June of 2020.
Reduced to $10.495 million in September of 2020 and then to $8.995 million in January of 2021, the TIC unit was briefly in contract but never closed escrow.
Relisted for $8.995 million this past March, the asking price for the prestigious Nob Hill penthouse has just been further reduced to $7.995 million, a sale at which would be “at asking” according to all industry stats and aggregate reports and would appear to represent “a million dollar gain,” ignoring the seven-figure budget for the renovation.

First Taste: The Presidio's Dalida is an Eastern Mediterranean delight
I know I’m not the only one who, eating regularly at the kind of restaurants most of the country would kill for, sometimes forgets just how privileged I am to live in the Bay Area.
When you can have oysters, organic farm-fresh produce, and grass-fed meats any time you want them, the extraordinary becomes ordinary.
But then, one day, you sit down at a new spot and it's like waking up in the Emerald City. What was beginning to appear black and white suddenly ignites with color. That’s Dalida, the modern Eastern Mediterranean restaurant from husband-and-wife team Laura and Sayat Ozyilmaz, that just opened in the historic red-brick barracks lining the southwest corner of the Presidio’s Main Parade Lawn.
The chef power couple (formerly of Noosh) is braiding the familiar and exotic into something unexpected, with flavors that are balanced, approachable, and objectively delicious but also bold and palate-pushing. They’re doing something no one else in SF is—and they’re doing it really, really well.

Tony Bennett tributes pour in from San Francisco leaders: ‘A national treasure’
Tony Bennett, the dapper Grammy-winning singer, painter, humanitarian and philanthropist whose career spanned six decades, amassed fans in nearly every corner of the world. Upon news of his death on Friday, July 21, at age 96, tributes from fans and celebrities flooded social media and news feeds.
While the crooner may have been a New Yorker, when he first sang “I Left My Heart in San Francisco” in 1961, it left an indelible mark on its namesake city. As such, local politicians chimed in to speak to the impact Bennett had on the city by the bay, with state Sen. Scott Wiener, D-San Francisco, noting the singer “captured San Francisco’s essence.”
San Francisco Mayor London Breed ordered the flags at City Hall to be lowered to half-mast.
“His contributions to this city go far beyond words on a page or melodies in the air,” Breed said in a statement. “From the first day he sung ‘I Left My Heart in San Francisco’ at the Fairmont Hotel through all the decades since, Tony Bennett embodied a love for this city shared by all San Franciscans. Today we honor his memory and celebrate his legacy that will stay with us forever.”

See Pictures: 11 Buildings That Are Even More Beautiful at Night
It’s worth waiting for the sun to set at these iconic destinations
There’s a certain magic that comes with a twinkling skyline. A testament to human design and innovation, a city at night seems to embrace visitors and residents with a softer touch and promises of enchanting experiences within. Though there might be nothing quite like the glow of a metropolis shining in harmony, that same wonder can be experienced at individual buildings as well. In fact, some structures are even designed to come to life at night in ways they just can’t quite achieve under the sun. Below, AD surveys 11 of these unique buildings that are even more beautiful at night.
The Empire State Building (New York City, New York)
National Centre for the Performing Arts (Beijing, China)
Meydan Bridge (Dubai, United Erab Emirates)
Canton Tower (Guangzhou, China)
Khan Shatyr Entertainment Center (Astana, Hazakhstan)
The Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia (Valencia, Spain)
Beijing National Aquatics Center (Beijing, China)
Monument to the Revolution (Mexico City, Mexico)

OUT of Site Sylvester Series Keeps it Real - NEW DATES!
PLEASE NOTE THIS EVENT HAS BEEN UPDATED SINCE OUR PRINT EDITION WENT TO PRESS. THE NEW OPENING DATE IS AUGUST 11
It’s 1972 and I’m nine years old sitting under the shade of eucalyptus trees in Golden Gate Park, witnessing my first wedding. Crouched next to a bed of wildflowers in the Shakespeare Garden, I look up at the two grooms towering over me. Sylvester, a gay black drag queen and soon-to-be disco pop star stands beside his male counterpart, both donning long flowing white gowns with white flower crowns in their hair.
Although I was just a child, Sylvester’s wedding left me with a lasting and radical impression. In an era when few people came out in public, Sylvester had given himself permission to express himself as the fabulous life-affirming gender fluid person he was and live exactly as he chose. He was a revolutionary.
“Sylvester created the blueprint for so many non-binary and trans people and q***r people of color to be themselves in a moment when it was not easy to do so, especially if you were a person of color, and non-binary or transgender in that era,” says Seth Eisen. Eisen is a visual and performance artist and artistic director of Eye Zen Presents which is celebrating Sylvester’s legacy this summer in a new production, "Sylvester, The Mighty Real", the fifth in a series of walking tour-performances conceived of by Eisen, to elevate and preserve the hidden q***r history of San Francisco. Audience members are given headsets and walk from location to location to experience events in the settings where they took place.
