Good leadership involves learning as much from yourself as from those around you. Juliette Rizkallah, CMO of Kong, is a leader who uses her business acumen to inspire her teams through big challenges. But she knows no CMO can be an expert at all marketing disciplines.
Juliette advises other leaders to surround themselves with talent, nurture their own curiosity, and position their teams internally and externally to spearhead major initiatives. She has used this team-centric approach to successfully upend the status quo and lead innovation at companies like Oracle, CA Technologies, and SAP.

“Focus your hiring efforts on all your own weak areas,” says Kong CMO Juliette Rizkallah.
Juliette believes that great CMOs didn’t make it to the top because they possessed all the answers or mastered all skills. Instead, they achieved excellence because they acknowledged their own shortcomings and exercised the wisdom to build teams with rock star members who complemented their leaders’ abilities.
On this week’s Legends of Sales and Marketing, learn how Juliette creates teams that deliver business impact, uncover groundbreaking ideas, and implement effective cross-company partnerships: https://bit.ly/3dRAXvm
Some would say mistakes are the best teachers. Sure, they teach us important lessons that help us build character traits. They inform our future attempts. They make us self-aware of our abilities and shortcomings. But our own mistakes can only teach us so much. Gary Briggs, former CMO of Facebook, believes that learning from each other’s mistakes is an equally effective path to growth.
This approach allows us to:
- Extract lessons from a larger pool of experiences
- Observe and learn from negative outcomes without experiencing them ourselves
- Develop empathy, trust, and mutual understanding with our peers
- Promote collective growth and expertise

Please join us in congratulating Danny Lai, the latest recipient of our Legends Among Us Award! This recognition enables him to expense up to $1,000 for a weekend vacation rental of his choice.
Danny joined People.ai because our mission to make everyone better at their jobs through data really resonated with him, but our people were the key factor in his decision. “Everyone in this company has the passion and collective curiosity for solving problems,” he says. “We’ll get there sooner if we identify, recognize, and leverage everyone’s ideas.”
We often ask our winners what advice they would give their younger selves. Danny’s advice is: “Understand what motivates you (and what doesn’t), and make sure that those are the defining cultural aspects of the company you choose. Denise Persson, CMO of Snowflake Inc., says that self-awareness is the most important attribute of sales and marketing leaders. Self-awareness doesn’t mean selfishness, though. A leader’s self-awareness should involve helping teams discover their strengths and promoting adaptability as the best tool to face adversity.
By using and developing their strengths, people create superpowers that enable them to take on challenges fearlessly, which boosts their motivation, performance, and happiness. What’s more, Denise says that a company whose teams have well-developed superpowers has a competitive advantage over its rivals.
To further promote self-awareness, she encourages leaders to:
- Understand that tough times are the best learning opportunities.
- Foster mental diversity by hiring people who complement each other’s strengths.
- Uphold integrity, truth, and trust in everything they do.

For Latané Conant, an AE’s appearance or interests don’t matter – as long as they make their numbers. As a former AE at SAP Ariba and Appirio, she is familiar with this culture. Latané is now Chief Market Officer of 6sense, a title she prefers over Chief Marketing Officer because “it puts the ‘market’ back into ‘marketing’.”
These are just two examples of how she marches to the beat of her own drum. According to Latané, leaders should openly admit their missteps, invite authenticity from their teams, and make everyone comfortable about sharing their own struggles and mistakes.
