❓What brings you joy these days?
-It brings me joy when I think about all the blessings that God has bestowed upon me. Embracing the love that I give & receive from my family.

❓What does Black History month, and specifically this year’s theme of , mean to you?
-To me, Black History Month is a time of recognition & reflection. From experience, the word resistance has been portrayed negatively, especially when describing our actions. BUT, This year’s theme of Black Resistance calls out the non acceptance of things that aren’t right, fair, nor just. As I read the theme for the year I am even more encouraged to research individuals who have resisted based on the principles of integrity and righteousness.

❓Why do you think it’s important to acknowledge/celebrate this, especially in the tech space?
-I think it is very important to consistently celebrate this, because there is a facade of Diversity & Inclusion in tech. It may seem that there are fair opportunities for everyone but that isn’t fully true. In this day and age, having the same experience, credentials, and/or work ethic as racial counterparts, is still not enough in the eyes of direct reports. The tech field is another realm in which Black people continue to create, contribute, scale, etc. and we should always be celebrated.

❓ What brings you joy these days?
- Watching my daughter grow from a toddler to a full child, learning to play my favorite Amy Winehouse song on the piano, and embracing my neurodivergence and taking the opportunity to set up my home in a way that accommodates my needs.

❓What does Black History month, and specifically this year’s theme of , mean to you?
- I am a descendant of slavery in the US, so for me, BHM and Black Resistance are about recognizing the sacrifices my ancestors made so that I can live the life I live today. I have the ability to reside where I want to reside, work when and where I want to work, and grow my family in the best way I see fit. My ancestors did not have these privileges; in fact, many of them lived through and resisted against atrocities that we simply can’t fathom in 2023, all because they intrinsically knew that they and their children deserved better, and because each generation dared to dream of and fight for a world in which their children would be afforded more freedoms and opportunities than they were.
Personally, I resist by showing up with kindness wherever I can, first in my interactions with myself, then in my interactions with my family, and then in my interactions with the rest of the world, even if the rest of the world doesn’t “deserve” my kindness. The unfortunate truth is that we live in a society that wants us to hate ourselves and each other, and every time I show up in a situation with genuine kindness and tenderness, I hope that I can give somebody else the permission to “pay it forward” and do the same for others in their world.

❓Why do you think it’s important to acknowledge/celebrate this, especially in the tech space?
- It’s so important to celebrate Black Resistance in tech because so many of us are making history every single day just by being here. It’s another unfortunate truth that “tech companies” as we know them today are yet another entity built without Black people and other minorities in mind, and yet here we are, still managing to build for us, commune for us, and change for us the financial trajectory of our lives, so that future generations might find that being Black in tech is just an everyday normal as opposed to still being an extraordinary feat.

❓ What brings you joy these days?
- My hobbies. Outside of work I enjoy playing with my two cats and dog, learning German and learning the drums!

❓What does Black History month, and specifically this year’s theme of , mean to you?
- To me, Black Resistance is everything. It’s how we have continued to move forward in this world. Modern movements such as BLM stemming from police brutality is a great example of Black Resistance, but even everyday things such as self care (especially as a Black Women in Tech) are meaningful and necessary to Black Resistance. Self care for me involves spending a lot of time with my pets (aka my kids). I am a huge animal lover and get a great deal of calmness and happiness from spending time with my two cats and one dog!

❓Why do you think it’s important to acknowledge/celebrate this, especially in the tech space?
- I think it is extremely important to acknowledge this in the tech space because as a Black person in tech, especially working within Engineering and Product, I very rarely work with other people that look like me. Tech is a space that is prone to a lot of bias, and often just existing in this space feels like its own sort of Black Resistance. Unfortunately facing bias as a Black Women in tech is not rare, but having organizations such as Blackly help to remind me that we are making progress and we do have allies.
