Our clients are very generous, and sometimes they bring to our studio more than film and print orders. Today Chef Michael Tusk, from and , sent us some pizzas and some very fresh produce from his farm Fresh Run Farm in Bolinas. We were just petrified by all this generosity. We appreciate it. Thank you Michael, Dora Tsui, and the rest of the team! Look at the little plums! They are just beautiful… #

PHOTO TIP OF THE WEEK! ➩
5 tips for Mist/Fog photography!

1. Check the weather in your area
Here in San francisco, we have an abundance of fog, especially out by Ocean Beach. However, it's always a good idea to check the weather and plan ahead. You can also go out and explore your area to find where and when the fog occurs.

2. Keep your camera steady
It's always important to avoid any camera shake. This is especially important when shooting in fog as the low light conditions will cause your camera to use a slower shutter speed, resulting in blurry photos if there’s any movement with your camera.

3. Include a focal point
Finding beautiful fog or rising mist for photography is one thing, but being able to find a subject or focal point is just as important. Without a main subject your picture isn’t likely to hold the interest of the viewer for long. Try searching for a lake or river for wildlife, look for interesting trees, foliage or flowers so that they can be isolated by the fog for a focal point. People can also make for great subjects and give an eerie yet stunning feel.

4. Create A Sense Of Depth
Fog is perfect for creating layers and depth in photos, which is extremely important in landscape photography which can often appear flat and lacking in depth. In fog, objects close to you will appear darker, and everything farther away just seems to disappear into the fog. With that in mind, find objects such as rocks, trees, animals, people or buildings that are positioned at different distances from the camera. This is a great way to create that depth that you’re looking for and make your image more interesting.

5. Look For Foggy Reflections
Another wonderful way to feature fog is to capture reflections in water. Including a reflection of the foggy or misty landscape in your photo can make it even more captivating and appealing. The patterns and forms created by the reflection can be quite stunning, especially if you create a symmetrical composition.

Happy shooting!

Forage From Fire - an interview with Norma Quintana 10/04/2018

Tragedy struck Northern California in 2017 when the Atlas Peak Wildfire ripped through Napa County. Entire communities were reduced to piles of ash and precious family treasures were lost forever.

For photographer Norma I. Quintana, the remnants of her home provided a stark backdrop for mourning, healing, and a fascinating series of images.

Norma’s Forage From Fire series features photographs of her charred personal items, set against the black gloves that first-responders used to sift through the rubble.

Recently, we sat down with Norma to chat about her incredible career as a photographer, printing her work at Dickerman Prints, and her exhibition at SF Camerawork.

PHOTO TIP OF THE WEEK! ➩ 5 tips of drone photography!

1. Check the UAV forecast
Always check the UAV forecast, which gives important information for the safety of both the pilot, the aircraft, and other people or buildings in the vicinity. It tells you which areas are off-limits, what the weather will be like for that day, how many GPS satellites are active within a particular area, and many more.

2. Shoot in RAW format
Taking photos in digital RAW format gives you more versatility in image post-processing. The significant amount of detail and resolution that can be preserved includes more levels of brightness, allowing you to make greater exposure and color adjustments without making the photo look unnatural—or worse, posterized due to color banding that’s common in low-resolution JPEG images.

3. Be prepared to improvise
There will be times when no careful planning can prepare you for difficult and unexpected shooting situations.Take advantage of gloomy skies to alter the mood of your image. Use unexpected direct sunlight to capture interesting shadows. Get creative and turn less-than-ideal situations into an unexpected photo opportunity. The results might even come out better than you expected.

4. Create higher resolution images with panoramic shots
Some drones have a built-in Panorama Mode, but if your drone’s camera does not have that feature, you can simply take several shots while panning the camera to capture more of a certain scene, then stitch the shots together using an editing software like Adobe Lightroom to create a single, high-quality panoramic image. This technique will allow you to capture higher resolution images and retain important image details, as well as capture an entire scene that can’t be taken with a single wide-angle shot due to the legal height limit for unmanned aerial vehicles.

5. Seek out symmetry, patterns, and lines & play with lights and shadows!
Shooting with a drone gives you a chance to see lights and shadows in a new and different way, especially when the sun is low. Capture those dramatic after sunrise and before sunset shots from high above the ground and discover how shadows can completely change the scene. They also allow you to capture patterns that aren’t visible when approached from other vantage points. Take advantage of that bird's eye view!

Have fun shooting!

Our Story

In the mid 1990′s, Seth Dickerman moved to San Francisco and opened Dickerman Prints, an all-optical custom photo lab. At that time, Dickerman Prints made fiber-based black and white prints to 40″x50”, and type C-prints to 30″x45”.

Seth’s enduring love of working with light and photosensitive papers kept him printing in the traditional darkroom until he began experimenting with the digital printing system at Robyn Color, an established San Francisco lab. When Robyn Color closed at the end of 2007, Seth purchased their digital printing equipment and moved Dickerman Prints to our first space in San Francisco’s Mission District.

In August of 2012, we relocated to our current home, a beautiful, light-filled lab space in the South of Market district.

While our methods may have changed, the goal remains the same. To work with the photographer’s images, to produce prints which best articulate what the photographer wants to say, employing the craft, skill, and perseverance to make the imagined manifest in the finished print.
