Probably made for a carnival parade, this float has a 'Kodak Girl' standing rather precariously on top of a giant folding camera carried on the back of a lorry. A poster on the side of the lorry reads - 'Save your happy memories with a Kodak'. The Kodak Girl in her distinctive striped dress was first used by Kodak Limited for advertising its products in 1910.

“You don’t take a photograph, you make it.” — Ansel Adams.

Born on this day in 1902, pioneering photographer Ansel Adams’ work continues to serve as tremendous inspiration.

The famed photographer’s love of nature began at 14 when Adams visited Yosemite National Park and snapped his first images of the park’s mountains. By 1940, Adams’ images had received critical acclaim and helped lead to the creation of Kings Canyon National Park.

Secretary of the Interior Harold Ickes was so impressed with the photography of Adams that he commissioned the artist in 1941 to produce a series of photographic murals for installation in the new Department headquarters.

Adams traveled throughout the West, documenting Interior-managed resources to show “the grandeur and influence of the Natural Scene” and the benefits of conservation, sound direction and stewardship of our resources.

On this , we're reminded of Sonya Noskowiak's "Workers Hands" (1937). This photograph tells a poignant story of an American worker whose days are spent in the field. Her hands—the hands of a laborer—are lined and creased with a fine layer of dirt, hovering over her polka-dotted dress. It is a stark contrast of textures—rough skin; smooth, glinting wedding band; and soft cloth.
