Mom's Kidney Donation To Ailing Son Means Family Toddler Home For Holidays For 1st Time "This is going to be our first Christmas home since he's been born. Every Christmas time since he's been born, he's been in the hospital. So, I’m excited this is our first Christmas home."
Our Liver Transplant Program completed another successful Transplant Conference with a record high number of attendance. Special thanks to our speakers for their informative presentations, generating several educational discussions. Thank you also to our sponsors, especially Novartis and Gilead who without their support, this event would not be possible. We enjoyed ending this year with such a memorable conference and look forward to seeing everyone again next year.
We are so happy to hear that baby Kingston is doing so well after his liver transplant. Our transplant team wishes Kingston and his family a wonderful holiday season.
Dr. Nancy Ascher, the first woman in the world to conduct a liver transplant, right here at UCSF, shared a few words of wisdom during International Women’s Month earlier this year.
Follow along this month as we share some of our most inspiring quotes of 2019.
We are so honored to be a part of the Paired Transplant Centers Program sponsored by The Transplantation Society-International Liver Transplantation Society (TTS-ILTS). A team lead by Dr. Maria Matamoros from Hospital Mexico in Costa Rica visited UCSF for a week-long stay to learn first-hand about all aspects of UCSF’s liver transplant program.
UCSF Kidney Transplant Program is being featured as one of the divisions in this year’s pre-recorded broadcast at ASN’s Kidney Week 2019 (November 5-10, 2019). We are showcasing the fantastic work they do in this video. Among quality related items like the size of our program and outcomes, they are highlighting our clinical nephrology fellowship and the collaborative work done between surgeons and nephrologists. Congrats, Kidney Transplant!

It was made possible by our sponsors Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation and Sanofi Genzyme and designed to provide a unique opportunity to hear our Kidney Transplant experts. They presented a comprehensive review and update on recent advances in Kidney Transplantation. Leaders in the field shared their medical and surgical expertise with regional physicians and allied health care professionals. Sessions included therapeutic advances in transplant, the management of patients with kidney disease and other contemporary topics.
Another great year for the UCSF Women in Surgery event!
These are such strong quotes from Dr. Ascher. She is someone that isn't afraid to break barriers and she is also such an inspirational role model for women everywhere.
“I love doing what I’m told not to do,” says Nancy Ascher. “When I was first in college, I was told, ‘You may want to go into psychology. Medicine is too long, too hard.’
I got to medical school and I was told, ‘Medical school’s great, but you don’t want to go into surgery. Surgery is too hard, too demanding.’
When I got to residency, the word was that transplant was the pinnacle in terms of commitment and technical expertise. So I picked that.”
Ascher went on to become the first woman in the world to conduct a liver transplant, right here at UCSF.
This Women's History Month, join us in saluting trailblazing in health and science.
