Since 2013, Maruya was one of the first Japanese Sushi Ya to offer omakase in the Bay Area. In 2013, Maruya opened in San Francisco's Mission District.
During these uncertain times, Maruya continues to adapt through its evolving menu: from sushi to Japanese inspired bento box as well as vegetarian items. It was one of the first restaurants in the district to offer a truly Edomae style sushi with its sleek sushi bar counter. With Chef Akifusa Tonai as the executive chef, his food presentation centers on sushi kaiseki. The menu are well-planned and

Maruya is now serving sushi omakase and vegetarian omakase. Since dining omakase should be enjoyable and a dining experience, it is only served in our private back patio.
Maruya has opened its back patio limited seating. Despite the chance of rain, many couples were able to celebrate Valentine's Day in 2021. Many of the guests visited Maruya for the first time. When asked how they found discovered Maruya, it's one of the few omakase restaurants that has a private patio.
We've been working on this project to provide outside seating to our guests, away from the sidewalk and away from the streets. Outside seating is now available. Kindly call us at (415) 503-0702 for reservation.
Eating is one of the most important human activities. We, at Maruya, take such activity seriously which is why we resisted offering tables on the sidewalk or a parklet on the streets. Instead, we converted our backyard into something wonderful and semi-private. Seating is quite limited and reservation is encouraged. Please give us a call to inquire at (415) 503-0702.
Maruya is now at NextDoor. Glad to be part of the community.

Just because one could not have dine-in doesn't mean one could not have sushi. Maruya has been specializing in special orders for nigiri or sashimi. Let us know what you want and we'll work within the budget parameters. Give us a call at (415) 503-0702.
For those of us who favors tempura, we created Ebi (Shrimp) tempura with Edomae Style (heavy sauce).
For now, gone are the omakase dine-in ambience. Maruya quickly had to shift gears to adapt to the changing times. We've expanded our menu and included take out dishes including chirashi.
We're counting down the days on when the City of SF will allow restricted dine-in. It will be a different world but no matter, we've missed you. In the meantime, we do have a variety of bento boxes for take out. We have vegan/vegetarian called Shojin Bento.
A variety of vegetables featured in Maruya's Yasai Ten Ju. It's one of our Bento Box Series on our take-out mentu.
It's Wednesday (May 27, 2020) and SF is experiencing a hot day. It's too hot to be in the kitchen. It's too hot to bake. Maruya has an alternative for you, a chirashi. Give us a call and we'll make one for you or two. (415) 503-0702.
Maruya's Inari Tofu is filled with sushi rice. It's a classic and it's made to order.
Maruya introduces its Edomae Ebi (Shrimp) Ten Ju. The ten ju is comprised of a shrimp accompanied with some vegetables drizzled with Amadar sauce. Take the night off from the kitchen.
To-Go Menu. Much like many of the restaurant business, Maruya had to quickly pivot and create a take out menu. Two months later after the shelter-in-place went into effect, Maruya's menu had found footing and expanding. We offer a variety of vegetarian rolls.
So many people are extending a helping hand and we greatly appreciate the support and encouragement.

Our Story
In 2013, Maruya opened in San Francisco's Mission District. It was one of the first Japanese restaurants in the district to offer an Edomae style sushi with its sleek one-of-a-kind sushi bar counter. The woodsy interior suggests a relaxed atmosphere.
Maruya is located on 16th Street in San Francisco’s Mission District. Many of our diners referred to it as a “hidden gem.” Our omakase course is simple and is deeply rooted in its Japanese tradition.
Emiko and Ray are the original owners of Maruya. They have been at the helm since its inception. Emiko is one of the few Japanese female restaurant owners in the Bay Area. As such, Emiko continually consults sushi chefs and coordinates the dishes that are found in our omakase course.
In the near future, the owners are exploring and are planning to add vegetarian dishes and/or dairy free dishes to cater to Bay Area’s vegetarians.
