A basement that surprises and delights with a view of a modern interior courtyard in a renovated San Francisco home. Originally built in the 1940's in the traditional style, a new design transformed it into a modern masterpiece. To accomplish the new layout and size, the existing structure was hydraulically shored for hard rock excavation and the addition of the new basement. The remodel also included a water feature with stone-clad walls, an elevator, PV solar panels, an integrated lighting system, and a 1,200-bottle wine room.

This week marks 5 years since Superintendent John Douglass joined MatPel, and we are better as a firm for it! He is an excellent builder with a long and successful history of projects in the Jackson Hole, Wyoming region, including an 11,322 SF ground up home currently under construction - and his building experience is rivaled only by his local experience. He is a Jackson Hole Mountain Guide and his wife Jessica Marlo Vandenbroeke founded and runs the Healthy Being Cafe, a local organic eatery. We are fortunate to have John on our team. This ground up, net-zero energy home designed by Klopf Architecture features an 11kW solar array and mechanized windows. Construction of the building envelope incorporated insulating concrete forms and structural insulated panels, resulting in an airtight structure ideal for maximizing thermal efficiency. A heat recovery ventilation system was installed to refresh the airtight, indoor environment. The home also employs an air source heat pump for heating and domestic hot water, which is distributed via an in-floor hydronic radiant heat system.

This Sunday marks the 54th annual Earth Day event – but to significantly impact climate change, we have to do more every day. That’s one of the reasons it was important to us that our San Francisco headquarters reflect our commitment to reducing our environmental footprint. With architect Aidlin Darling Design, we remodeled an existing 13,770 square-foot bottling facility into a LEED-NC-certified, modern office space with a 30kW photovoltaic array installed over a green roof system. The project has received numerous awards and was presented at the World Urban Forum 5 in Rio de Janeiro as a prototype for the sustainable reuse of urban industrial structures worldwide.

A complete renovation of a beach house in Stinson Beach, CA included exterior, interior, and systems work. Exterior improvements included new shingle siding, new windows and sliding doors, stone and wood decking and benches, and an updated garage with new doors. Inside, refinished maple floors and new wainscoting, wall paneling, appliances, bathroom fixtures, cabinets, and stone countertops were combined with updated HVAC and mechanical systems to create a signature oceanfront home.
