The academic health sciences library at UC San Francisco
Glyphosate Dreams, an art installation by the 2023 UCSF Library Artist in Residence Katina Bitsicas, is now on display on the main floor of the Kalmanovitz Library at Parnassus Heights through June 2025!

July is Disability Pride Month!
In celebration, the Library has collaborated with the UCSF Office of Disability Accessibility and Inclusion to acquire five audio books by disabled authors and activists for our community to enjoy. These titles include:

REMINDER: Applications for the Advancing Digital Health Humanities Institute (ADHHI) are due NEXT WEEK, Friday, June 28!
The Institute is a two-year program for health humanists, medical historians, community organizers, and digital humanists. Participants will be introduced and oriented with humanistic and computational methods used by the digital health humanities to support their respective projects.
The Institute aims to foster new conversations and connections across disciplines and career levels. We especially encourage non-tenure track faculty, independent researchers, graduate students, practicing physicians, and community organizers to apply. This program is funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities.

This exhibition visually translates the destructive herbicide glyphosate into chemically deteriorated images and an interactive augmented reality (AR) experience reflecting on its consequences to body and land.
Katina's work incorporates correspondence between the EPA and Monsanto from the Roundup Litigation Documents within the UCSF Industry Documents Library.
The reception will include an overview of the exhibition and a conversation with the artist. The exhibition is on view through June 2025.

April is Poetry Month! 📜🖋
To celebrate, we are highlighting poems by the poet and nurse Margaret Helen Florine, RN. These three poems and 64 more are from her book, “Songs of a Nurse” published in 1917. Florine was born in San Francisco in 1879 and worked as a nurse at Fabiola Hospital located at the intersection of what is now Broadway and West MacArthur Boulevard in Oakland, California.

📣 Call for Artist in Residence reminder: Apply by Sunday, March 24, 2024!
The UCSF Library Archives and Special Collections and Makers Lab are seeking candidates who will promote health humanities by exposing and re-purposing historical materials preserved within the UCSF Archives and Special Collections. The artist will collaborate with the Makers Lab to create pieces that explore the connections between art and the health sciences.
The residency period is July 1, 2024 - June 30, 2025 and the selected artist will receive $8,000.
Possible projects can include, but are not limited to:
- painting
- photography
- performance
- sculpture
- 3D scanning and 3D printing
- programmable electronics
- digital, video, or installation art

There are so many incredible , and we are pleased to highlight Mary B. Olney, MD.
Olney graduated from UCSF School of Medicine in 1932, completed her training in pediatrics at Zuckerberg San Francisco General, and was later appointed a clinical professor of pediatrics at UCSF.
In 1938, she founded the first wilderness camp in California for children with diabetes.
The UCSF Archives and Special Collections has digitized the Mary B. Olney papers, including photographs, reports, ephemera, and correspondence and you can access them online at calisphere.org/collections/26305/.
