Check out Hamilton Families' Real Estate Manager, Frank De La Campa, at the Board of Supervisor's Budget and Finance Committee two weeks ago advocating for extended public funding to directly benefit the families we serve. Frank is an extraordinary leader both at Hamilton Families and in the real estate industry, developing relationships with landlords and property managers throughout the Bay Area and Northern California for the purpose of helping families permanently exit homelessness.
"Prior to Hamilton Families, I had years of real estate experience in the private market, but it never hit the fulfillment part for me. I love being a part of Hamilton Families because there's nothing like experiencing the joy from families when we move them into their new home. I love getting to see families make a fresh start, and as a father of four, this work holds particular significance for me." - Frank De La Campa, HF Real Estate Manager
STATEMENT FROM HAMILTON FAMILIES' CEO ON THE 2024 SF POINT-IN-TIME COUNT:
Last Thursday, San Francisco released its preliminary results of the 2024 Point-in-Time (PIT) Count, the biennial count of individuals and families experiencing homelessness. The count showed a startling 94% increase in the number of families experiencing homelessness at 437 identified unhoused families. The sharp increase in family homelessness can be attributed to a combination of two factors:
1. Improvements in how families with children were identified this year thanks to the advocacy of organizations, such as Compass Family Services, the Coalition on Homelessness, GLIDE, Hamilton Families, and others. For many years, family homelessness service providers knew there was a major discrepancy between the number of families identified in past PIT Counts and the true reality and need that we have always seen working directly with families. Last year, Hamilton Families alone served 809 families, a stark contrast to the 205 families identified in the previous PIT Count.
2. The surge of immigrant families experiencing homelessness and the increase of local San Francisco families becoming unhoused due to the expiration of pandemic-era tenant protections. Last year, Hamilton Families’ Homelessness Prevention program prevented evictions for 125 families already living in San Francisco, double the number of families in the previous year.
What most would see as an alarming uptick in family homelessness is simply a more accurate snapshot of the unhoused family population that service providers knew all along was underrepresented. We believe the new figures are even still an undercount of the true number of families experiencing homelessness in our community.
If anything, the 2024 PIT Count is a call to action for all of us to remain vigilant and committed to the cause of solving family homelessness. At Hamilton Families, we are working to build a San Francisco Bay Area where the Point-in-Time Count is no longer necessary because we have collectively done the hard work of addressing the structural issues that creates family homelessness in the first place. Until then, we will continue meeting the most urgent needs of unhoused families in our community and creating the conditions for long-term transformation, both for the families we serve and for the broader Bay Area community.
In solidarity,
Kyriell Noon
