The SF Swedenborgian Church
Uniting spirituality and reason since 1787. Promoting spiritual growth through theology, fellowship, service, and the Arts.
"In the spiritual world, the world every person comes into after death, no one asks what your faith was or what your doctrine was, but what your life was like."
—Emanuel Swedenborg
How are we meant to read and interpret the central message of the Bible? From Rev. Lee's weekly message: "Even though the central message was given by God, still the Bible itself was written in a human language by human beings." Read more: https://sfswedenborgian.org/how-do-you-read-the-bible/
Why do we feel miracles only happened in the bible rather than all around us everyday? From Rev. Lee's weekly message, "Ancient people felt an amazing event that surpassed their ability or comprehension was an act of God. But when a modern person asks for a miracle, they seem to have a specific objective in mind." Read more: https://sfswedenborgian.org/everyday-miracles-2/
It is well known that Jesus cured many people. Yet, it is not well known that Jesus did not cure everyone with illness. A certain condition was required of the people who wished to be cured. This Sunday, Rev. Lee reflects on the spiritual meaning of curing deafness, and what it means to come to God for a cure.
When you hear, are you really listening? When others speak, do you understand? From Rev. Lee's weekly message, "In human relationships, what is equally if not more important as talking is listening. What is confusing about listening is its difference from our innate ability to hear." Read more: https://sfswedenborgian.org/are-you-really-listening/

Though many people are born into a religion, no one is born with faith. Rather, it is something we must learn and cultivate throughout our lives. But how? From Rev. Lee's weekly message: "The faith that we find in the Bible is about having a deep and unshakable trust in our Creator, because our Creator not only created us all, but intends nothing but joy and happiness for us all." Faith is the core of all religious practices. Yet, most if not all religious people struggle with what faith actually is, what it means to have it, and how to live with it. This Sunday, Rev. Lee explores the aspects of faith particularly reflecting on teachings of Jesus.
Jesus is one of those teachers who gave us many parables. Why parables? There could be a number of answers to that question. One that Swedenborg gives is because a much bigger meaning could be contained in a parable. This Sunday, Rev. Lee reflects on one particular parable in Mark where Jesus lifts up a lamp and explores its possible significance to our spiritual cultivations.
People have been rejecting truth when it runs counter to their beliefs for a very long time. Even Jesus dealt with this when he said, "seeing they do not perceive, and hearing they do not listen"! from Rev. Lee's weekly message: "Your heart acknowledges a certain matter as undeniably true. Now the question is, what you are going to do with such acknowledgement?" Read more: https://sfswedenborgian.org/acknowledgement-of-truth/
In a way, people may think that Jesus was against all traditions. Traditions themselves are not a bad thing at all, if we are willing to review what they are really about. However, traditions have been abused in a variety of ways. This Sunday, Rev. Lee reflects on what traditions meant in the Bible, and why Jesus was opposing them.
Sometimes we get caught up in the practice of religion over the actual belief. From Rev. Lee's weekly message: "Humans have a tendency to insist on their own reasoning as truth instead of seeking and finding the real truth descending from high above." God commands His followers to be different from everyone else, but what does this mean? From Rev. Lee's weekly message: "In the biblical context, to make something common is unacceptable to God, because God desires people to be holy, which means different." Many people wish and pray that God would come to them and accompany them in their troublesome journey of life. However, is this because God is absent in their lives? Or is it because they were unable to perceive the presence of God within their lives? This Sunday, Rev. Lee explores our desire for the presence of God in our lives and what it actually means to live in the presence of God.
When we find our lives especially difficult, why do we often have trouble finding God's presence? From Rev. Lee's weekly message, "I was looking for God or Heaven where the Divine could not have been present. I had been doing nothing but shouting out my anger and hatred, but of course these feelings are incompatible with the Divine." Read more: https://sfswedenborgian.org/where-is-god-in-times-of-trouble/

We can humbly ask for God’s guidance to help us embrace the contradictions in life. This can help us see situations from different perspectives. Join guest preacher Pastor Tassy Farwell for a reflection on embracing the shifting sands on life.
At the end of the Creation story in Genesis, God looks out on the earth, seeing all that had been made, “and it was very good.” Sometimes it can be hard for us to feel that goodness similarly, when we look at our troubled planet—the heatwaves, the extinctions, the social turmoil and divisiveness of our present moment. Looking for the good is an invitation to cultivate a deeper, spiritual perception of the Divine, that God is still working to protect all of us even in the most forlorn circumstances and places. How might we activate this angelic perception, train our ears to hear, our eyes to see?
How does knowing our own mind bring us closer to God? From Rev. Lee's weekly message: "Only through self-conscious choices can humans achieve their purpose of being, which is to become the image and likeness of God." Read more: https://sfswedenborgian.org/our-self-conscious-mind/

Happy Juneteenth - let us celebrate the hard-won freedom of all Americans today! 💛❤️💚🖤 We are eager to honor and acknowledge today's important anniversary of the 1865 freedom proclamation for enslaved people in Texas, which was the last state of the Confederacy with institutional slavery.
“Our Father in Heaven” is how the Bible describes God. Consequently, the people are often described as the children of God. This Sunday, Rev. Lee explores fatherhood as described in the Bible, searching for a proper understanding of what it means to be a father in this challenging time.
Wishing a happy day full of love and memories to all the dads and father figures out there! 👨👧👦💙❤️
According to the Bible, the role of a father is to be the protector and provider for the family. Is that still the case? From Rev. Lee's weekly message, "A father in this modern world is expected to be much more than the fathers in the old days although there is virtually no one to teach them how to be good fathers." Why is it that our spiritual selves feel at odds with our modern world? From Rev. Lee's weekly message: "Our life on earth often feels challenging because our true self exists in a realm where chronological time does not exist, while our outer self exists in a realm where chronological time dictates everything." What is undoubtedly central to Jesus’s messages is the kingdom of God or heaven. The kingdom of God is also what all followers of the three Abrahamic religions desire to enter. This Sunday, Rev. Lee reflects on both the meaning and nature of the kingdom of God based on Jesus’ teaching about the mustard seed.
