Today, Project HIRED executive director Sharon Winston led a discussion about handling rejection from your job search and creating it into lessons. Create a rejection plan, reframe it as a positive, and figure out what does not work for you. Rejection is not personal because of external reasons that you can’t control. Reinforce good habits, take little breaks in job search, reach out for support, and practice optimism.

Happy Disability Pride Month!! One of our board members, Rani spoke about her journey with cerebral palsy at our recent guest speaker event. Rani’s family left India when she was very young because the country wasn't accepting of people with disabilities. Her parents are very supportive and have high expectations of her because they want her to have all the opportunities. She didn’t feel different as a kid. Rani is currently the Digital Media Customer Communications Lead at Adobe and married with four kids. She says, “We don't need safers, we need allies!”

We had a wonderful guest speaker, Jessica Michaels. Jessica is a Talent Development Partner at Adobe, a Neurodiversity speaker, and a coach. She spoke about tackling the workplace with neurodiversity (invisible disability). You can be a good employee, but not a good communicator. It is a challenge with different communication styles because of different perspectives and misunderstandings. You find solutions best suited to you, contribute in your ways, and show off your super strengths. Can't change your abilities when it is associated with the disability; you can either modify or let go. Masking is adjusting to others’ needs to be successful, and it can get exhausting because not natural. Be authentic and vulnerable; If you feel safe, then share!! Share your experiences of how you overcame obstacles, and people should slow down to appreciate each other with differences. Jessica’s job search advice is to apply directly on the company’s websites and apply to disability-friendly companies

Last week, we had a guest speaker event about “Online Job Search Safety: Navigating your way around the cyber sharks.” You should be really careful about giving out personal information while applying and interviewing for jobs. Research companies to see if they are real and for credibility, and use extra security settings. Scammers might post jobs to get your info, and they are not legitimate jobs . It something is moving too fast, might be not creditable

Project HIRED had a Virtual Roundtable Discussion With our Board Chair, Jeff Jacobs about Share Lessons Learned in 2021.
As 2021 ends, it is time to reflect on how we changed the year.
The problem with the pandemic is working remotely makes people feel isolated. We lose our identity by not being in the community and have difficulty talking and approaching people.

Here are a few ways to rethink life as we go into 2022.
1. Redefine the meaning of success. Success can be joy and happiness
2. Identify stressors and learn how to adapt to changes in times of uncertainty.
3. Help people during hard times. One activity of self-care is being vulnerable with people who we trust.

Our guest speaker Bob Bonomo discussed "The Art of Networking" today. Networking is meeting, reaching out, researching, doing information interviews, making connections, learning and understanding job, company, culture with professionals and companies. Doing what you like is making connections. Networking expands professional and personal circles. Strong ties are close friends, colleagues, family; then venture out to others.

Today, our guest speaker, Kai Deering, spoke about virtual interviewing with confidence. Kai suggested to think of one thing you are most confident about, sure of yourself, and you do not have doubts. Confidence is when you decide you are good at it, learn knowledge, practice, you did the thing, and work on your mindset. A “No” is a pathway to Yes, and No does not mean denial. Give yourself grace that you are going to be bad before you are good. Think of it as having a bigger plan for yourself when things do not work out at this moment.

For a virtual interview, here is the setup. Make sure the camera is on and at eye level, and the microphone is working. Have a notepad to reference things that came up. Have a clear and real background behind you and no green screen. Dress professionally head to toe to feel like you are in person. Notify housemates to be quiet during the interview and put pets away.

Spastic Chatter: Getting Real About Cerebral Palsy ep 75 NDEAM feat Maddeline Thomas 10/26/2021

Maddy Thomas was a guest on a podcast called Spastic Chatter! She discusses that October is National Disability Employment month, her life with cerebral palsy, and her career journey. “My advice for job seekers with disabilities is to prepare for an interview and don’t get discouraged if you don’t get hired. The interviewer might not be exposed to people with disabilities and they might have an unconscious bias towards you ... Entering a workplace with disabilities is challenging. It will take time to feel comfortable and learn your tasks and how to work with others. Also, you have to adapt your workstation and job responsibilities, so you can be efficient and comfortable in your job.” - Maddy

Let’s Celebrate Disability in the Workplace 10/06/2021

"We like to say …. if you’re not including disability in diversity, you’re not leading inclusively. People with disabilities are truly the missing piece in the diversity conversation. We know that when employees begin to see disability as a strength, they’ll be more comfortable working as their authentic selves, disclosing their disability, and asking for the accommodations they need to succeed in their jobs". - Jill Houghton, President & CEO, Disability:IN

Let’s Celebrate Disability in the Workplace In my discussions I always talk about how disability is the missing piece in the global conversation about diversity, equity and inclusion. In fact, there are 1.

Maui Adventures - Ability Resilient Balance 09/29/2021

"People might think people with disabilities do not travel much because it is extra work. Why should we let it stop us? We need to see the world and adapt to new places" - Maddy Thomas. This also applies to people with disabilities in the workplace. Even through they need accommodations, they can adapt and do well in their jobs. Self-care is important too, we hope this blog post helps you plan your next vacation!

Project HIRED had a virtual event with Jeanne Lyons, who is a best-selling author and career coach. She spoke about finding creative solutions to get unstuck in life. Jeanne suggested letting go of thoughts, expanding vision and awareness. Get rid of negative thoughts and remember things. Expand your strengths to grow your potential. Difficult to see our strengths, so ask others for objective feedback. Don't count yourself out, and think outside the box. Transferable skills are gathering skills from all aspects of your life to relate to a job description.
Deal with emotions by having a positive mental state. Pattern interrupt is stopping negative habits and creating calm signals. Reframing is to stop limiting beliefs, think and see things differently. You might go through an identity crisis when you experience a lot of change. The solution can be matching your reality to what you want in the future. If you keep doing the same patterns, you will get the same results, so take action to get different results.

Today, Project HIRED had a Virtual Roundtable Discussion called "Navigating the Remainder of the Year" with Noel Kreidler. Noel talks about how you should not slack towards the end of the year. You only have a moment to engage in conversations, a lot of people interact with others and cannot give full focus on each person. Convey your accommodation in a concise way and practice explaining what you specifically need. Keep your focus and spirits up. Ask friends and family for job leads. Reframe your story in a positive way when you tell it to others.
