Music student Benjamin Saetern recently served as a music professional assistant at Sacramento's Broadway at Music Circus. For the June production of "42nd Street," Saetern worked on printing, copying, binding and editing the music for the show.

Doctoral composition student Max Gibson has been selected as one of four Springboard composers to take part in the inaugural New Voices Academy, to create a new work for The Carice Singers and George Parris. Max's piece, "...cold, clear, and blue...," a setting of Emily Brontë's poem, will be performed at the end of July 2024, in Worcester, UK, as part of the Three Choirs Festival.

This Saturday, Sacramento's Camellia Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Christian Baldini, UC Davis professor of music, premieres Baldini's "Elegy for Strings" featuring Alexandra Simpson, viola. Program includes works by Schumann and Sibelius. Details and tickets camelliasymphony.org

The choral ensembles of UC Davis, along with the UC Davis Concert Band, examine the “American Dream” through poignant words and music in a concert June 6 at the Mondavi Center. Nicolás Dosman conducts the choral ensembles in a program by American composers who in their works explore the hopes of a better life in a promised land. The concert's pinnacle is “Weather” by visiting composer Rollo Dilworth, which features the combined choruses, the concert band and pianist Shinae Kim. Tomorrow as a preview of the June 6 chorus concert (“Sorrow and Joy: An American Story”), visiting composer Dr. Rollo Dilworth will speak about composing for choirs. Following his talk, he will work with the choruses on his composition, "Weather," in an open rehearsal format. This event takes place on June 4 in the Mondavi Center and begins at 4:10pm. Free and open to all and is ideal for composers and singers.

UC Davis Symphony Orchestra will premiere Aida Shirazi’s “Meditations on Departure” (Ph.D., composition, ’21) with Finnish cellist Anssi Karttunen as soloist, and will also perform Antonín Dvořák’s Symphony No. 7 in their spring concert on June 1. Undergraduate music student Nathan Haghoo, winner of the orchestra’s concerto competition, will be the soloist on a movement of Jacques Ibert’s Flute Concerto. Concert begins at 7pm at the Mondavi Center for the Arts. Tickets available at the door.

The performance is comprised almost entirely of commissioned works written specifically for Thorner's unique voice by multi-national living composers including doctoral composition student Emily Joy Sullivan.
