1) Thirteen Stripes for Thirteen Colonies: The American flag has 13 stripes, 7 red and 6 white, representing the original 13 colonies that declared independence from Britain and became the first states of this great country.
2) 50 Stars for 50 States: There are 50 stars on the flag, one for each state in the country. The stars are white and arranged on a blue field, known as the "union."
3) Designed by a Teenager: The current design of the American flag, with 50 stars, was created by a 17-year-old student named Robert G. Heft in 1958 as part of a school project. His design was chosen out of over 1,500 entries and became the official flag on July 4, 1960. Wonder if he got any extra credit?
