launch over Santa Cruz Island! 🚀🌌
Viewing these launches out of , and sometimes even the landings, from is a unique experience due to the unobstructed southern sky and hardly any light pollution.

Milky Way summer still going on
I still don’t have the words to describe Wednesday’s whale watch with in the area.
Just a couple miles offshore of we were treated to a full day with over 35 blue whales, 25 humpback whales, and 10 fin whales.
•
1) Blue whale, the largest animal on earth, spouts with the in the distance.
2) Two humpback whales spend time at the surface near the east end of Santa Cruz Island.
3) Humpback whale makes a sounding dive in near the edge of near the shipping lane.
4) Blue whale on a long surface interval checks out a sailboat.
5) Pair of humpbacks dive deeper looking for food.
6) Blue whale swims along shore of Santa Cruz Island.
7) The fluke of a blue whale can be 25 feet wide! It propels these behemoths deep into the water to find krill.
8) Three humpbacks, including a very young barnacle-covered calf, spent a while checking out our boat throughout the day.

3) Song sparrow belting a tune
4) Glassy ocean leading up to the Elephant’s Belly
Snagged this frame from last November on Santa Rosa Island and re-edited it. The whole campground is aglow with activity while the sky is just as busy!

Things I’m not: rock climbing.

Thank you for pushing me for this neat opportunity to combine the two!

Fox in a fig tree!🦊🌳
•
Island foxes are excellent climbers, aided by their extending claws and opposable 5th digit on each paw. Much like myself, they are also food-motivated and, unlike me, will scramble in the dark up swaying branches for a delicious fresh fig snack.
“That’s no moon!”
Well, it sort of is. For this partial solar eclipse, the moon passed in front of the sun, giving approximately 70% coverage as seen from the Santa Barbara Channel.

Happy Humpday from the Humpbacks!
•
Humpback whales have been feeding all over the Santa Barbara Channel this fall, which is neat after a pretty sleepy summer whale season (at least for me!).
A pod of 5-6 whales breached, slapped their pectoral fins and flung their tails on an otherwise bumpy crossing home with . But it was certainly worth it!

Star trails above Cavern Point, Santa Cruz Island.
•
A full night of long exposures yielded this twirly mess of light. Each circle is a different star making its nightly journey across the sky, while some unknowing hikers lit up the trail with their headlamps too.

Channel Islands Spotted Skunks! Lots of them!
These adorable little stinkers are one of the least studied creatures of the island, due to their elusive and nocturnal habits. However, with fruits maturing on trees around Scorpion Canyon, we witnessed 5 individuals foraging and climbing for food.

Well that doesn't happen often! Once in a Blue Moon you might say...
August delivered a Super Blue Moon just before the end of the month, and the next one won't happen until 2037!

Scorpion Anchorage was home to a successful sheep ranch all through the 1900’s. After the land was turned over to the , some large equipment was left as a display and peek back at Santa Cruz Island’s rich history of human use.

Hungry hungry scrub jay!

Island scrub jays have been quite active with their growing chicks on Santa Cruz Island. This particular morning, 2 chicks squawked up a storm while the parents brought back food.

Playtime for this island fox pup!
Santa Cruz Island foxes are raised by both parents, so there is a shared duty for both mom and dad to care for and entertain the littles. Pictured here, daddy fox acts as a punching bag for the wee one, while mom went searching for food and a well-deserved break.

Roadways pose significant barriers to wildlife. Larger highways, and even small but busy roads, can limit the range of wild animals or cause unfavorable interactions.
For example: predatory mammals, like the pictured grizzly bear and coyote, can become stressed out by humans stopping to take photos and blocking their path. As people leapfrog in their cars, these animals must move further down the road to find an unobstructed path… or just give up all together.
•
Always remember to give wildlife right-of-way and plenty of courtesy space. After all, we are just visitors to their homes.
