POISON OAK BRUSHED BACK

La Purisima Mission State Historic Park has an extensive network of trails, and this year's spring rains have dramatically increased native plant encroachment on the trails—including poison oak.

Early on June 29th, State Park Ranger Trevor Scoggins and a small crew of volunteers brushed the Sendero de Los Padres Trail, which climbs the hill on the backside of the historic Mission Church. We cleared brush on both sides of the trail, which is popular with hikers and equestrians.

Trails Council is planning more "trail days" in the fall to widen additional miles of trails that crisscross the national landmark.

If you would like to be notified about the next trail maintenance day, drop us a note at [email protected] or join our outdoor volunteer group at http://sbvolunteers.org/

Recap: HIKE WITH HART

Despite the gray skies, we had a good turnout for this weekend's HIKE WITH HART event at the UCSB North Campus Open Space (NCOS). Healthy People Healthy Trails, the Cheadle Center for Biodiversity and Ecological Restoration, and the Trails Council co-hosted the event, which featured a brief talk by Assemblymember Gregg Hart and a two-mile hike. The event highlighted not only the importance but also the profound value of open spaces as we walked through a thriving example of eco-restoration atop the Devereux Slough*

Open spaces are integral to our community. They provide a venue for recreation and benefit the environment in numerous ways, including flood control, carbon sequestration, and habitats for migratory birds. As Mark Wilkinson, the Trails Council's Executive Director, highlighted during the hike, open spaces and trails play a pivotal role in our community, fostering active collaboration by bringing people together to experience personal health and environmental health benefits. Lisa Stratton, Cheadle Center's Director of Ecosystem Management, shared the story of the restoration of the estuary and encouraged everyone to watch the documentary film Bringing Back Our Wetland to learn more about the NCOS story.

The event was not just a hike, but also an open forum for community members, local politicians, environmentalists, and inquisitive minds to engage in a dialogue with Assemblymember Gregg Hart about the importance of creating and maintaining open spaces. As we walked along, we could hear group members involved in conversations about strategies for implementing and protecting the environment in the larger Santa Barbara County.

As community members, we left the hike with an even deeper appreciation for the open spaces we have in our community. These areas, often taken for granted, don't just appear; they are the product of hard-fought advocacy, planning, and management. Another significant takeaway from the event was the sense of community camaraderie. Seeing people from different walks of life come together to share a common passion for preserving and advancing environmental stewardship was uplifting. Hopefully, this community spirit permeated the group with a renewed sense of inspiration and hope for the future of our community and our environment.

SAVE HOT SPRINGS TRAIL

Chances are that you missed the release of the environmental documents issued by the County of Santa Barbara Planning and Development Department on May 7th. At first glance, they are about a proposed residence on a hilltop near the Hot Spring Trail. However, the issue is how the developer, with the County's permission, plans to transform the historic rustic trail (on a county-owned right of way) without considering how important the trail is to the community.

Everyone familiar with the trail will find it shocking when reading the environmental report claims the disruption of recreational trail access for thousands of trail users for many months, if not years, permanently removing the riparian canopy and paving over the natural surface pathway on a scenic segment of the trail, as insignificant and easily mitigated.

The Trails Council firmly believes that this complex project raises many issues and warrants an evening public hearing on environmental issues, the adequacy of the environmental documents, and improved public noticing. Your voice is crucial in this process. It is incumbent upon the County to notify the impacted public beyond the legal minimum to ensure that residents and visitors are at least aware of the project. We are asking the County Planning and Development Department to:

• Post the trail with large signs to inform trail users about the project and how to participate.

• Restart the public comment period after the trail has been adequately posted with large signs informing the public about the project and how to participate in the comment process.

• Hold a well-noticed evening public hearing on this environmental document to allow the public to comment and express any concerns and recommendations.

The project undermines the historic character of one of the most heavily used Front County trails and designated environmentally sensitive areas, which concern residents who pride themselves on our area's many pristine hiking trails.

CALL TO ACTION

We urgently need your support. Please take a moment to sign the SAVE HOT SPRINGS TRAIL petition at https://www.change.org/SaveHotSpringsTrail

Your signature is not just a statement of your commitment to preserving our trails and natural spaces; it's a testament to our collective responsibility. Together, we can and will make a difference. It takes less than two minutes. Don't delay. The comment period is closing soon, on June 19th.

OLIVE GROVE TRAIL | HIKE WITH HART

On Saturday, April 6th, more than 60 community members joined Assemblymember Gregg Hart in one of his signature ✭ Hike with Hart ✭ events at the Olive Grove Trail at the Old Santa Inés Mission. The event allowed outdoor enthusiasts and history buffs to engage with Assemblymember Hart while visiting one of Santa Barbara County's many remarkable trails.

Mike Imwalle, a member of the Santa Barbara Trust for Historic Preservation, was on hand to provide enriching details about the Santa Inés Mission Mills and the Olive Grove Trail.

California State Parks District Superintendent Dena Bellman also supported the event in partnership with the Santa Barbara County Trails Council, Santa Barbara Trust for Historic Preservation, and California State Parks.

“Connecting with nature is not only essential for our well-being but also crucial for understanding and preserving our local ecosystems. I appreciated hearing from constituents, experiencing the beauty of the Santa Ynez Valley, and learning more about the history of the Santa Inés Mission Mills,” Assemblymember Gregg Hart said. “As a member of the Assembly Water, Parks, and Wildlife Committee, I am committed to preserving our natural resources and increasing public access to the outdoors.”

“I feel like a time traveler when I walk the Olive Grove Trail,” said Trails Council Executive Director Mark Wilkinson. “It’s a great chance to connect with the land and the people who came before us, all under an open sky.”

The event coincided with Healthy People Healthy Trails Month, a campaign to encourage personal health while appreciating and taking care of public parks and open space areas.

GRAND OPENING | ARROYO QUEMADO TRAIL

Santa Barbara County Trails Council proudly announces the grand opening of the highly anticipated Arroyo Quemado Trail at Baron Ranch on Friday, February 16th. The trail is a scenic new addition to the Gaviota Coast's recreational tapestry. The ribbon-cutting officially marks the opening of this 6-mile trail, offering stunning vistas, diverse ecosystems, and a chance to connect with the Gaviota's rich natural heritage.

Nestled along the picturesque Gaviota Coast, approximately 13 miles west of Goleta, Baron Ranch boasts 1,083 acres of rugged terrain, vibrant chaparral, and the meandering Arroyo Quemado Creek. The meticulously crafted trail winds through this captivating landscape, inviting hikers, bikers, and equestrians to experience its wonders. Plans to formally open the trail were in process when the Alisal Fire tragically overran the Baron Ranch and the trail network. A combination of severe rain events in the following two years left much to be repaired, at a high cost, due to the fragile post-fire landscape.

The event featured expressions of thanks and gratitude from 3rd District Supervisor Hartmann, Director of Community Services Department Director Jesús Armas, Public Works, Senior Engineering Environmental Planner Joddi Leipner, Trails Council President Otis Calef and Trails Council Executive Director Mark Wilkinson. The event honored all who have worked to make the trail a successful venture.

Key Highlights of the Arroyo Quemado Trail:

➔ A 6-mile trail from Calle Real to Camino Cielo (12-mile round trip) traverses diverse landscapes, including grasslands, oak woodlands, and riparian corridors.

➔ Connection to the West Camino Cielo opens access to vast hiking and biking opportunities within the Los Padres National Forest and Gaviota State Park.

➔ Panoramic vistas provide awe-inspiring experiences overlooking the Gaviota Coast and the Pacific Ocean.

➔ Habitat for wildlife includes birds, bears, mountain lions, bobcats, coyotes, rattlesnakes, red-legged frogs, and ticks.

➔ Family-friendly, with trail difficulty rated easy for the first mile before gains in elevation generate moderate to strenuous difficulty ratings. Dogs are not allowed on Baron Ranch trails.

The Arroyo Quemado Trail represents a collaborative effort between the Santa Barbara County Community Services Department - Parks Division, County Public Works Department, Resource Recovery and Waste Management Division, the U.S. Forest Service, the Santa Barbara County Trails Council, Los Padres Forest Association, and dedicated community volunteers. Their combined vision has brought to life this remarkable pathway, enriching the Gaviota Coast and offering endless opportunities for outdoor exploration and environmental appreciation.

DOWNED TREE CLEARED BY VOLUNTEERS

Last week, a huge tree fell across the Arroyo Quemado Trail just past the second creek crossing and over 2 miles from the trailhead. Fortunately, Trails Council Board Member Kevin Wallace, with help from Justin Memenas, arrived on Monday to remove the tree. Chances are that few noticed it was down. Please give a shout out to Kevin and Justin for their stewardship.

With this weekend's rain events, we will need 4-5 days for the trails at Baron Ranch to dry out. Much of the trail network is on a clay-dominated terrain, which becomes sticky when wet and is slow to dry out. A good motto to follow is: Wet ground, turn around.

Now is an excellent time to plan next weekend's hike at Baron Ranch.
