Shinrin-yoku, forest bathing, has been shown in research since the 1980’s, to have numerous health benefits. From blood pressure reduction to improved mood, reduced stress hormones to improved immune function and balance, forest bathing promotes overall health and wellbeing.
I believe this is one of the pillars of health, to spend time in nature, and it is commonly found on treatment plans I give to my patients. It is also something I personally value and strive for.
Earth Day is a perfect reminder for all of us to get outside, immerse ourselves in nature, and appreciate the beauty of the natural world. We also must take care of our Earth so she can continue to provide for us.

Our Story
Dr. Hansen-Cárdenas graduated from the University of Natural Medicine (formerly National College of Natural Medicine) in Portland, Oregon in 2013. After completing her National Board examinations, she returned home to Santa Barbara, CA, to begin her practice as a Naturopathic Doctor.
After setting up a solo practice and seeing patients for a number of years in Goleta, Montecito, and Bakersfield, Dr. Hansen-Cárdenas got the opportunity to join Dr. Lizzie Clapham at Pathways to Natural Health — offering services in the more collaborative environment that she had always dreamed of — where she remains in practice today.
At Pathways, Dr. Hansen-Cárdenas helps patients attain optimal, sustainable health, believing strongly that the body’s innate healing mechanisms should be reinforced and not suppressed. Dr. Michelle Hansen-Cárdenas sees an array of patients and conditions. Her specialties include postpartum care, treatment of hormonal/endocrine dysfunction (incld. thyroid and adrenal conditions), acute and chronic infections, and gastrointestinal disorders, with results achieved through clinical nutrition, nutritional supplements, and more.
Dr. Hansen-Cárdenas welcomed her first child, Río Alexander Cárdenas, into the world with her husband Eric in 2019. They spend their time absorbing the many new lessons brought on by parenthood while enjoying music, good food, the outdoors, the ocean, friends, family, and snuggling with their cat, Badger.
