The Sky Center/New Mexico Su***de Intervention Project (NMSIP) announces the retirement of our dedicated, long-term staff member, Cynthia Gonzales. Cynthia has spent her entire career in New Mexico nonprofit leadership. She was hired as the first Executive Director for United Way of Santa Fe and from there served as Executive Director for Youth Shelters. In 2000, Cynthia joined The Sky Center/NMSIP, serving initially as Executive Director and then as Grants Director for the past 10 years. Cynthia received her B.A. Degree from Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas.

Selected by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in 1992, she served as a Federal Peer Reviewer for their community-based programs for at-risk youth. In 2004, Cynthia joined Governor Bill Richardson’s Task Force for Youth Su***de Prevention in New Mexico, working with constituents across the state to establish funding for youth su***de prevention. Most recently she has worked behind the scenes, helping to secure funding to expand programs at The Sky Center as the need for no cost behavioral health services grew to unprecedented levels. Cynthia’s leadership reflects values of integrity, commitment to community, honesty, and a passionate vision to use her skills and deep knowledge of nonprofits to benefit those in need. She is one of the people that compel our community towards a greater good, as she worked quietly and often unrecognized despite creating a tremendous impact on the lives of many.

On behalf of the staff, board of directors, and countless youth and families that have been impacted by Cynthia’s service, we want to publicly express our tremendous debt of gratitude and wish her the very best as she focuses on her family, beloved grandson, horseback riding, travel, and no doubt finding other ways to leave the world a brighter place.
