I grew up in a small New England town where my friends and I spent our days exploring the surrounding woods and fishing in the nearby ponds. As a teenager, I was a rock musician who wrote songs and performed live with my band in the Boston area. My home town also had a mental institution which allowed some of the patients to go into the center to interact with the residents. Years later, I have those memories to draw from when I write new projects. Your life is unique and interesting, and should be shared. What are your memorable childhood experiences that would make great films or television?

During these uncertain times, it’s important to look for what we can learn from our unique situation instead of falling into a victim mindset. Maybe it’s time for a career change, a steady job, to start a company or to take a much-needed break and re-evaluate our current life. What are you waking up to?
Casting your indie feature:
If you can afford to, hire a casting director. They’re experienced, connected, will handle the session so you can concentrate on the actor’s performance and they can deal with agents if you can’t or don’t want to.
Don’t get attached to a look for your character. Sometimes the best actor for the role is a different body type, race or even s*x.
Give your actors adjustments to see if they can take direction, what they do with that direction and if they’re difficult to work with. A good and secure actor will enjoy trying a different adjustment in the scene.
Always do callbacks for actors you liked. Some actors are great at auditioning but not so much on the second round. Definitely ask them details on the character, what the scene or film is about, what they think the theme is, etc. You may be surprised to discover that they don’t get the character or understand the film at all.
