Skulls v pumpkins this Halloween. So glad my nearly 13 year old will still indulge me.

Today was not a great day. We had to cancel plans we were looking forward to because the littlest tart got sick. I have an elaborate charcuterie board’s worth of cheese and six pounds of chicken wings in my fridge. But having a whole unexpected afternoon *did* allow me to finally make these ridiculous cinnamon apple whoopee pies with apple butter and cinnamon cream cheese frosting

is a national holiday I can get behind. I’m also desperately pretending it’s fall even though it’s 80 in LA and I’m in a sundress.

My sourdough starter is like an old, good, friend. We might not talk every week, but we always pick right back up where we left off. And where we left off last spring was trying to get a crisp crust and a light interior. We clearly both did a lot of thinking over the summer and we came back to the school year ready to work because this was pretty darn close to what I was hoping to achieve: visible crust, airy interior with enough substance to stand up to a slathering of butter.

How I have missed having a dog in the house.

We made a pit stop to see the memorial and it was just as adorable as an 80s childhood.

Took the kids to see a meteor shower but sunrise over the desert was also spectacular.

Going into August like …

I have been dreaming about coconut corn chowder since she won with it on Top Chef and I finally got around to making it and yeah, she deserved the win. I didn’t have enough chili flakes to make my own chili oil, so I subbed in some chili jalapeño crisp and it was perfect.

and it was a lot more effort than we’re used to — thanks — but it was a lot of fun and at the end, there was ice cream (not pictured because we don’t have air conditioning and we had to eat it quickly so it didn’t melt).

I went from “no cats” to “no cats in the house” to “Lucy needs to have a little snooze on her favorite chair before bed so she sleeps well” 🤦‍♀️

This morning’s harvest. If wealth were measured in summer squash, we’d be very, very wealthy!

We went away for a week and came back to this monster in our garden.

I truly believe in my heart that most people are one good picture book away from being halfway decent people. And since I’m trying to raise halfway decent little people, this was the very good picture book we read this month, along with some very Pride-flag-inspired cookies.

I don’t make the rules. I do make the pancakes. Lemon ricotta pancakes courtesy because Deb will never steer you wrong but I switched the sautéed apples for a quick blackberry maple syrup because that’s what’s in season.

Found a Fannie Farmer cookbook courtesy of my local group and loved the vintage feel of so many of the recipes, like these sour cream cookies that came together so quickly.

Was thrilled to find this gorgeous vintage Hull Mardi Gras fan vase at an estate sale yesterday.

Farming is all about balance. Some days are huge and other days are small, but, in the end, it’s all pretty much medium.

A leprechaun tripped out trap but escaped before he got caught so the only gold we got were golden scones for breakfast. And then I took full advantage of the diocese’s dispensation and ate corned beef on a Lenten Friday, followed by an apple traybake from County Kerry via Sláinte
