Thinking about having a drink on your next flight? Hold on a sec! A recent study found that alcohol can worsen sleep quality, decrease oxygen saturation, and increase heart rate at high altitudes. This can be especially risky for those with heart or lung conditions, but even if you’re healthy.

“Understanding how alcohol interacts with the hypoxic environment of airplane cabins allows people to make informed decisions about their in-flight beverage choices,” Rigved Tadwalkar, MD explains to Prevention Magazine

"A lower resting heart rate or slower heartbeat will fill the ventricles/heart better and allow for more of a forceful contraction of blood out to the rest of the body.

A fast heart rate, on the other hand, may not have that big suction of blood in and big squeeze of blood out. So, your heart health has more to do with the conditioning of the heart muscle than the actual heart rate itself"

Having a Dairy Sensitivity Might Actually Increase Your Risk of Heart Disease—Here's What to Know 01/24/2024

Did you know that dairy sensitivity may elevate the risk of cardiovascular disease? 🥛 Recent research reveals a correlation between IgE antibodies to common food allergens, including dairy, and an increased risk of cardiovascular death. ♥️

Allergic reactions involve the immune system’s response, releasing substances like histamines and cytokines. “While these substances are critical in defending against pathogens, chronic or systemic inflammation is also a recognized factor in the development and progression of cardiovascular diseases, including atherosclerosis,” Rigved Tadwalkar, MD, Consultative Cardiologist at the Pacific Heart Institute told Health.

Cardiometabolic disease: Young adults' lifestyle choices raise risks 12/07/2023

A new study shows that young adults' lifestyle choices, like poor diet, lack of exercise, smoking, and excessive alcohol consumption, are contributing to the rise of cardiometabolic diseases like diabetes, obesity, and high blood pressure.

“These findings suggest that healthcare providers need to pay special attention to young adults during routine check-ups,” Rigved Tadwalkar, MD of the Pacific Heart Institute told Medical News Today. “It is not enough to assume that youth equates to good health."

Don't wait for symptoms to start taking care of your heart. Make healthy choices today:

• Eat a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains
• Get regular exercise
• Quit smoking
• Limit alcohol intake

Hypertension: 'Ume' juice may help lower cardiovascular disease risk 12/05/2023

Are Japanese plums a heart-healthy superfood? 🟣 🍇 🫐

A recent study published in the journal Hypertension has shed light on the potential benefits of Japanese plums, also known as ume, for cardiovascular health. The study found that juice concentrate made from Japanese plums, bainiku-ekisu, helped protect mice from developing hypertension and also helped to shield their blood vessels from the damaging effects of angiotensin II, a hormone that plays a key role in regulating blood pressure.

"What's interesting is that even though this is a mouse model, the fact that this substance — bainiku-ekisu — was able to attenuate hypertension and protect against vascular remodeling is really quite positive," commented Rigved Tadwalkar, MD, Consultative Cardiologist at the Pacific Heart Institute.

While more research is needed to confirm these findings in humans, the study adds to evidence suggesting that Japanese plums may be a valuable addition to a heart-healthy diet.
