Saturday, September 7th is California Biodiversity Day,
a celebration that inspires discovery and connection to the nature of California while encouraging actions to steward and protect it. ππ¦π±
This year, California Biodiversity Day events are happening between September 7th - 15th, and there happens to be one in our backyard at the Sonoma Developmental Center!
Stop by the SDC from 10:00 am-12:00 pm tomorrow, September 7th, for a Bioblitz in one of the Bay Area District's newest park units!
A bioblitz is a community science activity through which scientists and non-scientists alike make observations and collect data through iNaturalist. When submitted on these platforms, your nature observations are used to understand biodiversity and take action to steward and protect it.
These activities, and the acquisition of the SDC property, also contribute directly to California's 30x30 initiative to conserve 30% of California lands and coastal waters by 2030 through
collaborative action! π€©

Image Descriptions:
1. An image promoting California Biodiversity Day on September 7th. Four children are sitting in the forest, exploring a plant, with one child using a magnifying glass. A graphic of sunglasses appears on the image, with one lens showing nature scenes and the other labeled "California Biodiversity Day." Below, it reads, "California Biodiversity Day is September 7th! Discover the Nature of California all week! September 7th β 15th, 2024." A butterfly is on the side of the sunglasses.
2. The flyer announces a Biodiversity Bioblitz event at the Sonoma Developmental Center on Saturday, September 7th, from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm at Suttonfield Lake. Participants should bring a smartphone with the iNaturalist app, wear sturdy shoes, and bring water and snacks. The event involves exploring the area, observing plants and animals, and recording their findings. If you can't attend on the 7th, you can still contribute your observations between September 7th and 15th.
California Biodiversity Day is almost here! ππ±π¦
Check out this awesome event--hosted by one of the State's newest California State Park Properties, and one of our nearest park neighbors--the Sonoma Developmental Center (SDC)!
Not sure what a Bioblitz is? Check out the description below to learn more β¬
"Participants can make observations (through the iNaturalist app) of any plants and animals they see, including signs of life such as nests, s**t, or tracks. You can also go out "bioblitzing" on your own anytime during the week of Sept. 7-15 and your observations will automatically be added to the SDC iNaturalist project."
Bioblitzes like this one, are great opportunities for people to engage in community science efforts, interact with Parks staff, and learn more about the State Parks in their community. The project also helps our Natural Resources staff build a species list for the park and can assist with ongoing research about the area!
Sometimes service can be spotty out at SDC, so if you'd like to join the project ahead of time, or learn more about the project, click the link in the comments to access the SDC Bioblitz through iNaturalist.

With the recent stormy weather Trione-Annadel State Park experienced multiple trails that were significantly impacted by very large downed trees. Our Maintenance employees and the District Trail Crew have been hard at work clearing large trees that required technical rigging to clear. There are still several trees to go, we appreciate your patience as we work through all the trees!
Its that time of the year where we ask our park visitors to vote for your favorite trails found here in Annadel. Click on the link and vote for us! https://votesonoma2024.bohemian.com/
Starting October 2nd and ongoing through February 2024, we will be conducting controlled burns in the southern part or the park along ridge trail and pig flat trail. The trails will still be open for recreation use. But there will be small controlled burn piles monitored by professional firefighters.
