Hi everyone! This week at Kennedy-White we have been celebrating National Radiologic Technology Week! Please help us cheer on our wonderful xray team who send their warmest regards to each of you, our patients! They wanted us to share some information with you that you may find interesting, together with some suggestions on the best clothes to wear during your xray at Kennedy-White.

National Rad Tech Week is celebrated each year during the week that includes Nov 8. Today, Nov 8 is the 124th anniversary since German mechanical engineer and physicist Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen produced and detected electromagnetic radiation in a wavelength known as x-rays. Wilhelm's Nov 8, 1895 discovery earned him the first Nobel Prize in Physics in 1901.

This year's National Rad Tech week's theme is "Waves of the Future" and the week long celebration calls attention to the important role medical imaging and radiation therapy professionals play in patient care and health safety.

The third image in this post shows a hand xray that Wilhelm took of Swiss Anatomist, Physiologist and Histologist, Albert von Kölliker in 1896. Credits to Wikipedia for the image.

As a friendly reminder from our Xray Team, if you are coming in for images here at Kennedy-White they recommend wearing clothes with a minimum of metal detailing. If they could dress everyone before coming in for their visit, they say they would recommend pants or shorts with an elastic waist or leggings such as yoga pants. Women coming in for a spine xray are recommended to wear undergarments such as a sports bra or equivalent with a minimum of metal.

Men's cargo pants that have multiple zippers for detachable legs are particularly problematic as each spot of metal in the clothing will show up on the image in the way the metallic ring does in the hand xray shown in this post.

While you may feel particularly stylish with metallic studs, sequins or other metal detailing on your clothes, we would request that you avoid those options on days you expect to have an xray with us.

Thank you for choosing Kenney-White Orthopaedic Center as your providers for orthopedic care and we wish you all a wonderful weekend!

This past Wednesday, Dr. Nguyen (pronounced Win!), one of our Spine Specialists, gave a talk at Sarasota Memorial Hospital on Failed Back Surgery: Why Your Spinal Surgery Did Not Work. We want to send a big thank you out to everyone who attended!

Here are a few photos his nurse, Carolyn took.

If you would like to learn more about Dr. Nguyen and his practice, we invite you to visit the KWOC website here:

http://www.kwoc.net/MeettheProviders/LamNguyen

Dr. Lam Nguyen is a board certified, fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeon who specializes in spinal surgery. Following his undergraduate studies at Duke University, where he majored in psychology, he attended medical school at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine at Chapel Hill. He was inducted into his medical school’s John B. Graham Research Society. Dr. Nguyen subsequently completed his Orthopaedic Surgery Residency at Loyola University Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois. During his residency, Dr. Nguyen investigated the effect of cervical spine alignment on spinal posture and biomechanics. The results of his research have been published in peer-reviewed orthopaedic journals and presented at multiple national and international scientific meetings. Dr. Nguyen was also awarded the distinguished title of “Chief Orthopaedic Resident” during his last year of training.

After his residency training, Dr. Nguyen pursued a one-year fellowship in spinal surgery, where he trained with nationally and internationally renowned spine surgeons at Oregon Health and Science University in Portland, Oregon. Dr. Nguyen specializes in the comprehensive care of spinal disorder, from the cervical spine (neck) to the sacrum (tailbone). This includes degenerative conditions (disc herniation and stenosis), as well as spinal deformities (scoliosis and kyphosis), spinal trauma and instability, spinal infections, and metastatic spinal tumors. Dr. Nguyen also has experience in minimally invasive spinal decompression and fusion, cervical disc replacement, and complex revision surgery. The diagnosis and treatment of spinal conditions is a complex process, and Dr. Nguyen relies on a thorough assessment to recommend the right surgery for the right patient. In an era when medical decision is largely based on laboratory results and imaging findings, Dr. Nguyen still believes in the art of medicine: correlating patient symptoms with objective study results and offering the appropriate treatment solutions. He understands the stress and challenges facing the possibility of surgery and aims to help patients achieve a peace of mind in understanding their problem. He takes pride in listening to patients, and helping them formulate an individualized plan that is based on high quality science and cutting edge technology. Dr. Nguyen finds satisfaction in guiding patients through surgery toward their fullest potential recovery.
