Save Our Seabirds
Save Our Seabirds is committed to the rescue, rehabilitation, and release of sick and injured birds.
◦ We respond to over 5,000 bird rescue calls per year.
◦ We house and feed over 120 permanent avian residents, representing over 60 different species, every day.
Please educate yourself on this issue and speak out. Florida Audubon has put together an excellent page with links.
Cornell University, in their cornerstone study "The State of the Birds" points to scientific data showing that North America has lost 30% of our adult bird population (3 Billion Birds) in the past 50 years. Most of this is due to loss of natural habitats.
Meet OB & Curly! They are Florida Sandhill Cranes who have been residents at SOS for a number of years due to beak deformities that make it difficult for them to eat. Their previous habitat was destroyed in a past storm, so they've been hanging out indoors for a number of months. We recently rebuilt a long defunct enclosure and gave OB and Curly a brand new home. They have lush vegetation and several large pools to enjoy now - and they seem very content with their new surroundings.
This rescue was a combined effort of numerous people and groups. Nest removal is "touchy" issue and should only be done in very specific instances. Here - Sarasota Youth Sailing Program and SOS teamed up to help - along with Captain Lisa, Nick, Alan, Alyssa, Leo, Tim, Ray, and Heather. Thanks to all! We love to see our community coming together for the well-being of all wildlife!
Please stay tuned for news about Save Our Seabirds' programs. We will decide by 12 PM tomorrow if we will cancel the Night Hike scheduled tomorrow evening due to the impending storms. Participants will be notified by phone and/or email. Stay tuned.
Check out a recent release - stay for the end. Our Osprey friends shows off for us!

Fly high, free birds, fly high!
This morning, four mottled docks were released into the morning sky with assistance from our rescuer Lisa Wood.
As we prepare to celebrate our Nations FREEDOM on Independence Day, we wanted to share this moving video as yet another injured bird regains his own FREEDOM! Happy 4th from Save Our Seabirds!
We've reopened a Gift Shop on campus, and invite you to check out some of the gifts we have available. We have bird themed hats, ear rings, and shirts, as well as SOS branded mugs, bags, pens, tumblers and more. We are limited on space, so our Gift Shop is "outside" the office. Every purchase offsets the $60,000 per year we spend on food for the birds!
It's always heartwarming to see a bird flap its wings to freedom. Here, our amazing rescuer, Dave Thomas, releases a black throated blue warbler back into the wild. Go little guy, go!
Remember the torrential rains on June 11th? This is what our rehabilitation areas looked like the next morning, and for much of the week. We had to relocate a number of birds to different enclosures, and it made for tight space for several days - but THANKFULLY no birds were harmed.
Buck - a Red-Tailed Hawk - got a new Bachelor Pad yesterday! Buck is a permanent resident here at SOS, because of a missing eye and some neurological issues. He's been living in the "MEW" for awhile - which is an indoor and non-public portion of our property. Staff has been fixing up a new "pad" for him - and yesterday Buck moved in. He is now visible to guests as they walk up the ramp to the Gift Shop and Offices - and we KNOW he's going to enjoy the great outdoors.

Phew that was a close one!!! Arda and Leo to this great blue heron’s rescue. It had a HUGE hook imbedded in its left shoulder as well as yards of fishing line. Thank goodness for our rescuers!

We are also open 365 days a year - FOR FREE - to admire 100+ non-releasable birds on our bird walk.
Last week, Save Our Seabirds hosted over 130 students from Fruitville Elementary. They had program time, a tour of the facility, and a mangrove tour, complete with field guides and binoculars. It was an absolute pleasure sharing our mission with them. Would you like a field trip with us ? Inquire at 941-388-3010 or [email protected] , Sarah Rubin
