Happy June! πCheck out our Pride display now up on the display shelves on the first floor! π³οΈβπβ¨
In 1969 on a hot June night, after police invaded the Stonewall Inn, a riot broke out and q***r people rebelled. The next year, activists marked the one year anniversary of the Stonewall Riots with a parade for LGBT rights and visibility. Ever since 1970, June has been a time of LGBTQ+ commemorative pride parades and festivals, which are politically inspired but also social functions that allow marginalized q***r people to be safely out and visible in their local communities.
Our library resources can get you caught up with LGBTQ+ history and art! Visit ringling.edu/library for more information. π³οΈβππ³οΈββ§οΈ

Gabri wanted to share these Goldstein Library selections for π€π¨: "Jean-Michel Basquiatβs art serves as a means for introspection. He is an acclaimed African American artist prominent in the 1980s Neo-expressionism movement, addressing colonialism, racism, and classism in his works. He employs social commentary fused with text, drawing, and painting.
Renowned as one of America's living contemporary painters, Kerry James Marshall has long served as an inspired chronicler of the African American narrative. His distinctive style encompasses expansive interiors, evocative landscapes, and commanding portraits, all celebrate the strength and presence of black individuals.
Faith Ringgold, an American artist and author, is renowned for her groundbreaking quilted narratives that reflect her political convictions. As a performance artist, mixed media sculptor, and intersectional artivist, she continues to push boundaries and inspire with her diverse body of work."

And Osa Atoe - she's actually a Sarasota local who is a multi-talented zine-maker, musician, and ceramicist. Shotgun Seamstress is a zine I have known about for a while that celebrates Black punk culture. I am so honored that we get to house these books in our library collection!" π€

"This timely book surveys the varied ways in which Black American artists responded to the political, social, and economic climate of the United States from the time of the Great Depression through the landmark Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka decision. πΌ Featuring paintings, sculptures, and works on paper by artists including Jacob Lawrence, Horace Pippin, Augusta Savage, Charles White, Elizabeth Catlett, Norman Lewis, Walter Augustus Simon, LoΓ―s Mailou Jones, and more, the book recognizes the contributions Black artists made to Social Realism and abstraction as they debated the role of art in society and community." π¨

Our library director Bianca selected this new addition to our collection to highlight for Black History Month - The Quilts of Gee's Bend! π£ "These patterns and piecing styles were passed down over generations, surviving slavery, the antebellum South, and Jim Crow. During the Civil Rights movement in 1966, the Freedom Quilting Bee was established as a way for African-American women from Geeβs Bend and nearby Rehoboth to gain economic independence. The Bee Cooperative began to sell quilts throughout the U.S., gaining recognition for the free-form, seemingly improvisational designs that had long been the hallmark of local quilt design. As awareness grew, so did acclaim, and the quilts entered the lexicon of homegrown American art." (from arts.gov)π§Ά Check out this beautiful book on our display on the library's first floor! πͺ‘
