Shortly after 1am on Saturday April 6th the Sayville Fire Department was activated for a reported garage fire on High Street. Chiefs Fazio, Quarte and Reutter responded soon after the activation and were then followed by Engine 2, Engine 4, Rescue 6 and Ladder 9.
Chief Fazio was the first Chief to arrive on scene and encountered what was determined to be a large fully engulfed shed deep in the rear yard of a residence on High Street. To further complicate and create an even more dangerous situation was the fact that two 20 pound propane cylinders were on fire along with a report of chlorine in the shed.
The crews from both Engine 2 and Engine 4 operated hose lines simultaneously to extinguish the fire and cool down the propane tanks in order to reduce the chances of an explosion. The crews from Rescue 6 and Ladder 9 both provided tools and worked to overhaul the remaining part of the shed which was completely destroyed. A representative from the Town of Islip Haz-Mat Team was requested to the scene in order to confirm that the propane tanks were secure and posed no further danger. Additionally, the Town of Islip Fire Marshal’s Office was also requested to investigate the cause of the fire. All Fire Department units were back in quarters by 2:15am.
The Sayville Fire Department would like to remind all residents as to the importance of properly storing items such as propane cylinders, gas cans and pool chemicals especially as we approach the spring and summer months where their use is more prevalent.
On Wednesday April 3rd at approximately 2pm the Sayville Fire Department was activated for a reported structure fire with occupants trapped on Astor Drive. An Ex-Chief that lives around the block was first on scene confirming a working fire, but that all of the occupants were out of the building.
Assistant Chief Reutter and Engine 4 arrived on scene within 6 minutes of the initial activation and were soon followed by Assistant Chief Quarte, Ladder 9 and Rescue 6. Units were confronted with a very heavy fire condition thru-out the 1st and 2nd floors as well as the attic of a house. Firefighting operations were made even more difficult due to high winds that severely impacted the fire conditions.
Chief Quarte assumed command of the fire as units initially attempted to knock-down the fire before transitioning to an interior attack. As units made entry into the building the interior stairs as well as a portion of the rear of the house collapsed. All members were forced to immediately withdraw from the building and begin an exterior attack with hand lines and the tower ladder.
Multiple mutual aid departments were requested to assist with the fire attack, provide relief of firefighting crews as well as cover the district for any additional alarms which there was one. The Sayville Community Ambulance responded and provided EMS and Firefighter Rehab assistance at the scene. There was one minor injury reported for a civilian that assisted an occupant down a ladder from the second floor.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the SCPD Arson Squad and Town of Islip Fire Marshal’s Office. The Department would like to remind all residents of the importance of having properly working smoke detectors. The Sayville Fire Department will be hosting a FREE Smoke Detector Give-Away program on April 14th from 10am-1pm at our Station #1 located at the corner of North Main Street and Lincoln Avenue. One free smoke detector will be given to each residence within the Sayville Fire District while supplies last. This give-away was made possible through a grant that the Board of Fire Commissioners applied for and received last year which is part of our continued efforts to serve and protect our community.

On Monday afternoon at approximately 3:45pm the Sayville Fire Department was activated for a structure fire on Harp Lane. During the response Chief 31 was advised by a member on scene that it was a working fire. Chief 31 immediately advised dispatch to re-activate the alarm as a working fire which would automatically start a pre-planned mutual aid response.
Chief 31 arrived on scene soon after and encountered a heavy fire condition showing out a couple of windows on the 2nd floor as well as consuming the front of the house. Within approximately 6 minutes from the initial activation of the alarm, the Department had Chiefs 31 & 32, 2 engines, 1 ladder and a Safety vehicle along with 20 Sayville volunteer firefighters on scene. The crews immediately secured a water supply, stretched 2 hose lines, placed numerous ladders on the building and began a search for victims. The first hose line briefly hit the fire on the exterior and then entered the building to make an aggressive interior attack. The fire was rapidly knocked down and extinguished with searches for victims being negative.
In addition to the initial units mentioned, the Sayville Fire Department had 4 additional units respond and operated with a total of 45 Sayville volunteer firefighters. The Holbrook Fire Department responded with one engine to the scene as part of our weekday automatic response plan. The Bayport Fire Department responded with one engine to the scene to stand by as the Rapid Intervention Team should a firefighter become injured or trapped. The West Sayville and Bohemia Fire Departments were requested to provide stand by coverage for the District in the event any other alarms were received with West Sayville being moved up to the scene to provide a relief crew. The Sayville Community Ambulance Company provided medical stand by coverage at the scene.
There were no reported injuries to any residents or firefighters, but two cats and a bird were removed from the residence by firefighters. The fire is under routine investigation by the Suffolk County Police Arson Squad and the Town of Islip Fire Marshals office in order to determine a cause.
