We are currently experiencing a š„ heat advisoryš„µ that is promising sweltering temperatures for the balance of the week. Remember, as we are sensitive to heat, so are our pets! We can work together to get them off of the streets and into safe and loving homes. Cement and blacktop are harmful to our animals ā if you see something, say something! The Schenectady County SPCA is here to help take in reported animals who are suspected to be homeless. We can be reached at 518-755-9517.
Thank you for all that you do to support the SPCA! Donations are the best way to contribute to our cause, but we know that itās not always feasible. A like and a share also go a long way to help spread the word. Stay safe! https://countyspca.com/donate/
Itās hot and sunny today with temperatures expecting to feel like weāve hit the 90s. The Schenectady County SPCA hopes that you and your furry friends are enjoying the weather safely. Tomorrow, March 23rd, is National Puppy Day ā and puppies still need your help! The Humane Society of the United States estimates that there are at least 10,000 puppy mills across the country. A puppy mill is a high volume breeding facility that churns out puppies for profit, all while ignoring the needs of the pups and their mothers. The Schenectady County SPCA wants to put an end to all puppy mills. If you suspect inhumane treatment to the animals in our community, please give us a call at 518-755-9517. If you would like to contribute to our National Puppy Day cause, please click here https://countyspca.com/donate/ Your donations go a long way to keeping our community members safe and healthy. š¾

While taking your pets out on walks this weekend, be cautious of the ongoing parades and celebrations. Remember, your pets may not want to be surrounded by large crowds and noises. Letās remember to keep our pets safe this weekend. An ID tag, a secure harness, and a good leash go a long way in preventing an accident.

We āSpring Forwardā this weekend, which means for most commuters, it will be dark in the morning again. The Schenectady County SPCA urges pet owners and community members to stay vigilant ā just because it will be hard to see the animals does not mean they wonāt be there. Be careful driving, consider wearing a reflective vest when taking pets on their morning walks, and most importantly, if you see something, say something! We are here to assist, and ask that if you suspect animal abuse, to call us at 518-755-9517.

The Schenectady County SPCA is back to offer tips to keep your pets safe on Valentineās Day! šš¹
1) Though you might consider your furry friend your Valentine, it is important to remember not to share your sweets. Chocolate, candies, and gums that are sweetened with xylitol are unsafe for pets to consume.
2) Know which types of bouquets and plans that could be harmful to your pets. Common toxic plans might include lilies and tulips. Consult with your vet regarding what species of plants might be toxic to your breed of cat or dog.
3) Candles are both appealing to humans and pets. Be sure to keep open flames out of reach or opt to use a batter-operated candle.
As always, the SPCA is here to help. If you suspect an animal in your community may be harmed, give us a call at 518-755-9517

The Schenectady County SPCA is back with more tips to keep our animals safe. Todayās theme: How to keep your pets happy and healthy during winter.
1) If itās too cold for you, itās too cold for your pet. Do not leave your animals unattended outside.
2) Paw covers donāt only help on hot pavements, dogs can benefit from shielding their sensitive skin from the snow and ice.
3) Outdoor chemicals, such as salt and de-icers, can negatively impact cats and dogs. Pet owners should be mindful of what their animals can get into outside, and take proper cleaning measures if necessary.

To all those who have or who can give us a hand this holiday season, we thank you. š¶š¾
Cats are often tempted to explore the enchanting world of Christmas trees. However, this innocent exploration can quickly turn dangerous if the tree is not properly secured. The Schenectady County SPCA advises pet owners to securely anchor their trees to prevent any accidental toppling that could potentially harm their feline companions. In addition, consider opting for pet-friendly ornaments made of non-breakable materials to reduce the risk of injury if accidentally knocked off the tree. The SPCA stands ready to assist pet owners in creating a safe environment for their cats during the holiday season.
Donations are always welcome and greatly appreciated. Please visit https://countyspca.com/donate/

Like humans, dogs and other animals can also get very sick from hypothermia. Exposure to extreme cold can cause organ dysfunction and fatalities. Thanksgiving is tomorrow. Do you know which hazards your pets should avoid? As promised, the Schenectady County SPCA is here to keep you up to speed by delivering the need-to-knows.
1) Remember, poultry bones can damage your petās digestive tract. Instead of leftovers, be sure to give them a treat that comes from your local pet store.
2) Visitors may upset your pets. If you know ahead of time your dog or cat is nervous around new guests, reduce their emotional stress by putting them in another room with a favorite toy.
3) Watch them closely. While people are entering or leaving your home, your pet may try to exit if youāre distracted by welcoming.
Please report suspected animal abuse to the SPCA. https://countyspca.com/file-a-complaint/

According to the American Humane Society, more cats are euthanized than dogs because they are more likely to enter a shelter without any owner identification, and that just 2% of cats who enter animal shelters are reunited with their owners. Today, the Schenectady County SPCA is kindly reminding you to protect your cat with a collar, ID tag, and a microchip (to cover if their collar breaks off or is removed). This post could be a sign that someone on your feed needs to see this today. Please consider liking, sharing, and donating to the SPCA so we can all help keep the cats in our community safe!

Did you know that November marks National Senior Pet Month? If you didnāt, did you know that senior pets are often the last ones to be adopted from the shelter? The Schenectady SPCA is here to keep you updated on
1. Senior pets suffer from the misconception that they are less adoptable than younger pets due to poor temperament or behavior. In reality, there are many reasons why or how a pet ends up in a shelter, from relocation, financial restrictions, or more. Older pets are usually well-trained, can follow basic commands, and make excellent companions.
2. An older dogās primary needs may change over time. They may require more rest and could need to use the bathroom more frequently.
3. Senior cats are more subtle about showing signs of arthritis or aging, but they still could use accommodations such as wider litter boxes so itās easier for them to get in and out of.
Remember, every pet deserves a good home, regardless of age. Older pets in shelters have a higher risk for being euthanized. You can help the SPCA place senior pets in homes this month by donating. Click here https://countyspca.com/donate/ Or use our P.O. Box at Schenectady County SPCA, P.O. Box 9516, Niskayuna, New York 12309
As always, thank you for supporting the Schenectady County SPCA.
Daylight Savings Time is ending on Sunday, November 5th. Hereās what you need to know to prepare for the change and keep our animals safe.
1) The majority of pet owners in our community will be walking their pets in the dark before bed. For some this could be right after work, others maybe after dinner. Itās important to remember that just because the sun is setting earlier does not mean dogs and other animals are in for the night. Drivers need to be extra cautious for people and animals on the road.
2) Itās quite difficult to see dogs at night, especially those with a dark coat. Please remember to wear a reflective vest and carry a flashlight with your pet to avoid injuries.
3) Walks are very important to a dogs overall wellbeing. Be sure to bundle up and donāt let the colder nights deter you from taking care of your animals.
Friendly reminder to report any acts of cruelty to the SPCA at 518-755-9517.

Donāt scroll. Instead, take a few minutes out of your day to learn how to make Halloween safer for your pets. The Schenectady County SPCA is back with more hints on how to keep a secure and loving home environment for your pets this spooky season. Here are five tips you must know.
1. Halloween decorations, like spider webbing and balloons can be deadly to pets if swallowed. Be sure to keep them out of reach.
2. Keep your pet indoors on October 31st, especially if trick or treating is happening in your area. Dogs could react aggressively to strangers that approach your house, if left outside. Always keep them in a safe place where they are comfortable.
3. Dressing your pet in a costume may cause stress, obstruction of vision, or risk for strangulation. Never allow your pet to be in costume and unattended at the same time.
4. Keep proper identification on your pet at all time.
5. Don't leave unopened or open candy around pets, chocolate is toxic to animals and could possibly be fatal.
As always, report any acts of cruelty to the SPCA at 518-755-9517, and stay tuned for more tips and tricks to keep your furry friends safe and secure!
