Bernice Reagon is a hero of mine. Time got away from me but it felt strange to let her death pass without a word.
She and my grandmother were friends. My grandmother (Mrs. C) founded the Albany CORE singers to raise funds for SNCC (the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee) and it was a project that they bonded over. I met Bernice Reagon once when I was about 10 years old. My grandmother had brought me to hear her in concert for the first time. She was in a wheelchair and couldn’t get up the stairs to see Ms. Reagon so she sent me up with messages. I ran up a couple of flights of stairs and stood before her completely out of breath and kind of shouted, “ My grandmother says HI! “ She smiled at me with a little laugh and said, “Well, who is your grandmother?” I told her and she hugged me and sent me back with more messages. She soon became the soundtrack to a large part of my life; those who have been friends with me long enough know. I learned to sing, matching my voice to hers on those tapes and CDs and those deep tones eased something in my heart. The second time I met her, she was sitting by my grandmother's bedside for the last time, coloring and chatting happily with my daughter about this and that. I wondered if my daughter would ever know how lucky she was to play with this deep well of wisdom, knowledge, beauty, and strength.
