Returning to Sport Using Noraxon Surface EMG

When an athlete suffers from an injury, coaches and clinicians use surface EMG to aid in the rehabilitation process. EMG helps gain an objective understanding of muscle imbalances, activation patterns, and functions that may not be visible to the naked eye.

EMG can be used in return-to-play for:

🖥️ Customization of rehab plans
💢 Reduction of injury risk
📊 Progress monitoring
🏋️ Reinforcement of proper movement patterns

Return-To-Play with Noraxon 🏀

Following an injury, assessing an athlete's readiness to resume sports activities can be achieved through functional performance testing. These measurable evaluations serve as valuable tools for coaches and clinicians to identify imbalances, weaknesses, and limitations that may not be apparent through visual observation alone.

Noraxon's software, MR, simplifies the integration of biomechanical recording devices, empowering coaches and clinicians to develop tailored rehabilitation plans while decreasing the risk of re-injury and optimizing athlete performance.

An athlete's ability to efficiently utilize the stretch shortening cycle (SSC) is critical in many sports. The eccentric utilization ratio (EUR) can be calculated by dividing the peak power of a countermovement jump by the peak power of a squat jump. It can reveal an athlete’s ability (or lack thereof) to efficiently utilize the SSC.

At Noraxon HQ, we enjoy having the opportunity to compare different test scenarios. In this instance, our focus was on contrasting gait patterns with and without the use of orthotics. Our subject reported that she often has pain in one leg after walking for longer periods. For our assessment, we used an h/p/cosmos PhysTread Pressure Treadmill and our myoRESEARCH software to look at pressure distribution, center of pressure, and gait phase parameters.

Do you see anything interesting in the Bilateral Gait Report?

The trapezius muscle is a large muscle group with 3 main parts that not only move the arms, neck, and head but also stabilize the spine and scapula. The upper traps raise the shoulder blades, while the lower traps are used for scapular retraction, depression, and rotation. Athletes who suffer from stiff or "overactive" upper traps may be using them to compensate and assist in stabilizing the scapula during arm movements where the lower trap muscles should be used.

In this comparison report, we're showcasing how a simple banded lower trap activation exercise promoted lower trap activation and improved an athlete's movement quality during a lateral raise movement. After an EMG evaluation of the lower and upper trap muscles, the athlete was cued to move her shoulder back and down before starting the movement, which helped to lower upper trap involvement and increase lower trap involvement.

A squat is one of the most common exercises to activate the gluteus muscles. This functional movement has many different variations that can not only maximize a workout but also make everyday life easier as it works the legs, core, and glutes. In this demo, we compared a normal bilateral squat to a squat with added resistance to test for differences in glute activation. What other squat variations do you think would have a similar effect on glute EMG?

SmartLead Spotlight! 🔦

The Jamar Dynamometer is a specific type of dynamometer designed to measure grip strength. It's commonly used in medical and rehabilitation settings to assess hand strength and monitor progress in patients with conditions affecting hand function. The device typically consists of a handle with an adjustable k**b to accommodate different hand sizes. The user squeezes the handle with maximum force, and the dynamometer measures the amount of force applied. This measurement is often expressed in pounds or kilograms.

The Dynamometer connects to the Ultium EMG Sensors, allowing grip strength to be measured and documented within our integrated software, MR3.

Custom Report Highlight: Broad Jump Analysis

A jump analysis is an easy and repeatable assessment to measure an individual’s ability to express force and generate power with their lower extremities. Analyzing a subject’s ground reaction force (GRF) during jumping can aid in understanding their explosiveness, symmetry, and performance. The measured data can be used to help direct, validate, and monitor training and rehabilitation regimens.

The broad jump (also termed standing long jump) requires the athlete to jump forward from a standing position and land on the force plate. This type of jump is used to assess horizontal jumping capabilities. When used with myoFORCE, jump landing capabilities can be quantified.
