The Medical Association’s CPT Editorial Board, responsible for developing billing codes used by doctors, has announced it accepted proposed updates to remote monitoring codes, which will take effect in 2026.

While the exact details have not been released, the update will allow doctors to bill for providing devices in cases where fewer than 16 days of data are collected, as well as for management services related to monitoring that take less than 20 minutes. This update follows several years of effort, with some previous attempts abandoned along the way.

Telemonitoring claims for Medicare beneficiaries increased sixfold between 2018 and 2021! There are some concerns, however, that rural areas are being left behind.
