Look who Scott saw this morning! It’s Mark Candelaria, AIA, the founder and principal of Candelaria Design (a Scottsdale-based architecture firm).

Architect Mark Candelaria is the guest speaker today at the Arcadia Camelback Tour, presenting a talk titled “Soulful Design: Remembering to Keep the Art in Architecture.”

There is so much more to designing a home than just drawing up a set of plans, and the entire Candelaria Design team embodies this, working closely with their clients from beginning to end. After building a client’s home, Mark—who also loves to travel and cook—has even been known to prepare dinner for them! Just last year, he published a unique coffee table book that features some of his more timeless luxury designs, each paired with a specific recipe inspired by the home. We haven’t gotten our hands on this book yet, but you can find it under the title “Mark Candelaria Homes: Designs for Inspired Living.”

Will received a visit from Scott and Debbie in Portland, Oregon, earlier this month, a first time in the state for both of them! Will was eager to show them what makes Portland so unique and inviting! Will relocated his studio to downtown Portland, Oregon, a few years ago—in the spring of 2019.

We have an update on the spire!

In June, we posted on our social channels that some Paradise Valley residents, including our very own Scott Jarson, were leading an effort to save the spire on the iconic Ascension Lutheran Church set for demolition.

We're pleased to share the news that By The Guild will help coordinate and remove the spire next week ahead of demolition while it awaits its new location.

KJZZ 91.5 FM Phoenix's show series 𝘚𝘵𝘢𝘺𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘗𝘰𝘸𝘦𝘳 looks at people who have made Arizona their home. Earlier this year, our very own Scott and Debbie Jarson were interviewed by Lauren Gilger as a part of the series. 🎙️

Over the course of the interview both Debbie and Scott speak on what makes an architecturally unique home and how they got started specializing in the sales and marketing of architecturally unique properties at a time when mid-century homes weren’t yet considered mid-century or appreciated in quite the same way they are today! Phoenix historic neighborhoods were newly founded at the time and only just started being protected. Most contemporary and modernist homes were considered a harder sell (with a longer sale cycle) that many of their real estate peers just couldn’t quite understand. Coming from a strong background in art and having studied architecture, they could both appreciate and speak in depth on design to help bring these properties to the limelight with a genuine passion!

Staying Power: A pair of realtors helped define Phoenix architecture The Show's series, Staying Power, continues looking at people who have made Arizona their home with real estate agents Scott and Debbie Jarson.

Just for fun, take a look inside this unique luxury dome home located in Sedona! 🏜️

Coined as "the home of the future,” it was open to the public as a tourist attraction when it was built in the '90s. The current owners now have the two largest domes on the property reserved for a unique Airbnb experience —their way of continuing the original mission of allowing the public to view and experience the inside space.

The original builder Ken Johnson used a building technique similar to Binishells, which were made most recognizable in recent history by Robert Downey Jr. and his wife with their sustainable home in Malibu. The Monolithic Domes are constructed using a process that involves bolting down giant balloons, laying a rebar grid over the top, and spraying concrete over the entire structure before deflating the balloons —producing a series of hollow connected concrete domes.

Three Paradise Valley residents including our very own Scott Jarson came together to help save an architecturally significant part of the Ascension Lutheran Church building which has been set for demolition. Scott took the lead on making the presentation to the Town Council earlier this month. The plan, as presented, is to take the 77-foot spire designed by William Wesley Peters, a student and son-in-law of Frank Lloyd Wright, and re-purpose it as a standalone historical landmark. Local architects and community members came together to discuss how this might be repurposed, including James Trahan from 180 Degrees Design + Build and Erik Peterson of PHX Architecture. Peterson put together an initial rendering of what the spire could look like positioned as a local historical landmark in the Town of Paradise Valley.

Historical Advisory Committee Chair Catherine Kauffman, Councilwoman Christine LeBelle, and Paradise Valley Mayor Jerry Bien-Willner all agree the preservation of the spire is a good community effort.

As of now, the Paradise Valley Town Council has given the initial go ahead. We will follow the next steps closely to provide another update on this important, architectural preservation pursuit!

ASU Library houses a rich archive of architecture-related items and original source materials from some of the most prominent architects in the Southwest (including: Blaine Drake, Albert Chase McArthur, Alfred Newman Beadle, and Will Bruder). The collection is widely used by students of American architecture, new and practicing architects, as well as local homeowners looking to research the history of their homes!

We at azarchitecture/Jarson & Jarson Real Estate have visited and studied the collection ourselves and there is a wealth of information there! Harold Housley, an archivist for the Design and the Arts Special Collections, said homeowners often get excited to find drawings of their home in the archives.
