Steamtown National Historic Site has an opening for a Community Volunteer Ambassador (CVA) - a paid 48-week internship with the National Park Service between September 9, 2024 - August 8, 2025.
The park is seeking a reliable, creative, and outgoing person to join our team and with a goal to build and develop a park-wide Safety Campaign.
The CVA will be responsible for producing videos, social media content, graphic design, print publications, and safety-geared programming at Steamtown National Historic Site. Additionally, they will contribute to park efforts in community outreach, volunteer service, and interpretive and educational programming.
The position includes a weekly stipend of $600, limited health care/childcare benefits, housing allowance, and professional development funds PLUS eligibility for both an AmeriCorps Education Award $6,895.00 (pre-tax) AND Public Land Corps Hiring Authority upon successful completion of the program.
To be eligible, applicants must be high school graduates, between the ages of 18-30 (up to 35 for veterans), a US citizen or permanent resident, and comfortable working outside for extended periods of time.

Students at McNichols Plaza Elementary School will board the Heritage Express "rolling classroom" next month at the Steamtown National Historic Site to learn more about regional history as they travel through several former coal mining communities to Carbondale. And here's the inside scoop: on April 20th, you can snag advance tickets for our summer excursions (May-September) on recreation.gov. Plus, we'll have a limited supply of tickets available for our short rides.

ALL ABOARD! -- Rangers Christopher Carey and Tim O'Malley from the Steamtown National Historic Site visit fourth-grade students at Riverside East School in preparation for the Heritage Express, a "rolling classroom" that will take them -- and about 2,000 other local students -- from Scranton to Carbondale in a series of interactive field trips over the month of May. The Lackawanna Heritage Valley is partnering with the National Park Service, Lackawanna Historical Society and NEIU 19 to provide a memorable steam-powered journey filled with exciting opportunities to learn more about the rich history of the Lackawanna Valley.

LHV OFFERS FIRST ROUND OF 2024 PARTNERSHIP GRANTS
Is your organization dedicated to enhancing our regionโs quality of life by contributing to a rich mosaic of abundant natural resources and thriving cultural, recreational, and historic treasures?
The Lackawanna Heritage Valley is seeking partners who share a passion to inform, educate or entertain residents and visitors alike through a variety of community-oriented projects. LHVโs Partnership Grant program offers up to $5,000 for eligible initiatives submitted by nonprofit and civic groups, schools, and governmental entities.
โOur selection process involves a thorough evaluation based on the projectโs potential to create positive change within the National and State Heritage Area,โ said April Rogato, LHV executive assistant. She noted the program requires a dollar-for-dollar match of the requested amount and applications are due by March 1st.
Some past recipients include the Anthracite Heritage Museum, Scranton Jazz Festival, First Friday Scranton, Waverly Community House, the Tripp House, Lackawanna Historical Society, and Everhart Museum of Natural History, Science and Art.

Scranton Trolley #505 is a 1929 Osgood Bradley Electromobile owned by the Scranton Railway Company that tells a significant story of how Scranton became the "Electric City." And the Lackawanna Heritage Valley National and State Heritage Area is proud to partner in ongoing restoration efforts! The latest upgrade adds two new bolster bearing assemblies, partially funded by an LHV partnership grant with the National Park Service. The Lackawanna River Heritage Trail will host a โFirst Day-First Peopleโsโ Walk to usher in the New Year with the Rev. Rebecca A. Barnes, Rector of St. Lukeโs Episcopal Church, Scranton.
The January 1st journey of renewal begins at noon from the Elm Street trailhead in South Scranton and continues to the Six Nations Amphitheater. The two-mile, ADA-accessible stretch of trail pays tribute to local Native American history with a sculpture of a Haudenosaunee fisherman-chief and stone carvings of animals. Most of the trailโs surface is paved and well-suited for a moderately paced two-hour round trip. The event will include a service to honor the indigenous peoples who came to Scranton before it became Scranton.
