Promoting Bilingual Education in Multicultural Societies: Reflections from our Food for Education Program in Guatemala

Linguistic discrimination is still prevalent in classrooms across Central America. Native languages are disappearing, causing local indigenous peoples to lose an integral part of their national heritage. Every 14 days, one of the 7,000 known languages spoken worldwide dies. By the end of this century, half of these languages will disappear.

Read also about language bias, and the Global Communities' program called UNIDOS to help mitigate and remedy these trends. UNIDOS supports students with daily meals, school supplies, and educational materials available in local languages.

On this day, GlobaWA and Pangea recognize the bravery and selflessness of aid workers across the globe.

On 19 August 2003, a bomb attack on the Canal Hotel in Baghdad, Iraq, killed 22 humanitarian aid workers, including the UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Iraq, Sergio Vieira de Mello. Five years later, the General Assembly adopted a resolution designating 19 August as World Humanitarian Day (WHD).

Each year, WHD focuses on a theme, bringing together partners from across the humanitarian system to advocate for the survival, well-being and dignity of people affected by crises, and for the safety and security of aid workers.

WHD is a campaign by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) and humanitarian partners.
